After being diagnosed T2 13 years ago I have today been told the GADS result was 2000 - yes two thousand. The hospital clinic have now provided me with a ketone monitor and strips for both urine and blood, an appointment with dietician and masses of information on what insulin to take and precisely when! Feeling teary and feel all my work since diagnosis was a waste of time. Current HbA1c now 92 - was 94 in Sept. Having difficulty with Libre as majority of time it shows my reading 21+. When I have taken ketone readings they have always been at the minimum level
Can anyone out there help me put things into perspective please!!!

Hi.

Sorry to hear you are feeling overwhelmed and dejected and emotional. I only had 6 weeks doing my utmost to control my diabetes before I was started on insulin and subsequently tested for GAD and I was tearful, so I can understand you being gutted after 13years of battling with it. The important thing is to look forwards and not backwards. You are now going to be treated as a Type 1 and you will get the help and support you need.

Libre has limitations and it is much less accurate when levels are above range so whilst you may not be as high as 21 your levels are likely still pretty high if your HbA1c is in the 90s and you probably need to be doing finger prick checks both for BG and ketones if BG is persistently mid teens or above.

Which insulins have they given you? Once you get into a routine with using insulin and your BG levels come down into range, you should start to feel a lot better but it is OK to have a good cry when you need to because it is a sort of grieving process.

If you have any specific questions about your new insulin regime, feel free to ask.

I am going to tag @everydayupsanddowns and ask him to move this to a thread of it's own so that you will get more comprehensive support as it can be confusing or get overlooked when it is tagged onto another old thread like this one.

The good news is that you now have the correct tools to help you control your diabetes. Your previous work wasn’t wasted - you did the best you could do with the information you had then. 🙂

Are you checking the Libre 21+ results with a fingerprick? Have you started your insulin yet? It can be a lot to take in at the beginning and it’s perfectly normal and justifiable to feel upset. It does get easier though. Remember too that you’re not alone.

I’ve moved it to its own thread for you @pippaandben

Sorry to hear how you’ve been feeling :(

Feel free to vent, rant, and offload here - we are rooting for you and know just how grim diabetes can feel at times.

Try not to consider your efforts so far as wasted - there are differences in diabetes management, there is a lot of overlap too - and you’ve already made connections here for tips, hints, questions to ask your HCPs and we are cheering you on as you adjust.

It will get easier 🙂

Thank you for your kind responses and support- so thankful this forum exists!!
Have been given very specific advice as to exactly when to do correction doses and last evening every reading was under 10 - I think my pancreas has had such a shock it has decided to behave itself at least in the short term and am checking all under 5 libre readings with old meter and am finding blood reading about 3 units higher.
Had to phone clinic as ketone meter instructions did not make sense and nothing moved/worked. Was talked through exactly what to do amid many apologies from consultant for not demonstrating it - but she had thought I had had too much to cope with as it was nearly one and a half hour appointment. Her final comment to me was that now they had caught up with me they are not letting me go!
C peptide test next as she does not want to miss out on anything. Diet appointment already made for end on month with at least 2 sessions with their specialist.

Your quick response was exactly what I needed - thank you very much.
I have been on insulin from 6 months after initiaL diagnosis in 2011. Basal changed to Toujeo about 6 months ago - 30 units in morning. Correction ratio 1:3 and basic carb ratio 1:7 from 1:9. Corrections only to be done if at least 4 hours before bedtime and must test at normal meal times even if don't eat anything and normal meal dose to be given 15 minutes before eating. So far I am finding fingerpricks are 3 units higher than libre so no extra sugars needed!!
