Type 1
Hi there,

I recently was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes through DKA. Although now my antibodies have come back and although they are positive for type 1 they are significantly lower than what most people would be when they are diagnosed. Does anyone have an opinion on this??

Kind regards

Antibody testing is not very conclusive. It can add a little clarity to the clinical factors which are really the best way to define a diagnosis, but it is rarely conclusive on its own.

You can be Classic T1 with very few antibodies (if much of your beta cell mass has already gone) or be classic T2, but show positive for antibodies.

I wouldn’t worry about it. Best to stick with your T1 diagnosis. My understanding is that people with T2 rarely produce ketones so your DKA in itself is a pretty big T1 flag.

Having had DKA and some antibodies present does indicate T1. The other useful test is the c-peptide which shows your natural level of insulin production but doesn't look like you need that test
