Hi all. Ive had tonsilitis and my blood sugar was ok even though I was ill. Then I started a course of antibiotics and even though the infection has nearly gone my sugars are being very unreasonable. Keep having trouble bring sugars down........... is this the antibiotics????? Do they effect blood sugar?😡

It's more likely to be the tail end of the effects of the infection, than the antibiotics.

However, antibiotics can affect gut / absorption of food and pills, which matters particularly for oral contraceptive pills, which is why women of child bearing age are recommended to use barrier contraception during and after course of antibiotics.

Ahhhhh the absorption of food then might be delayed.... hence why mumber kind of ok and then seem to go higher when bolus running out!😉

Experienced exactly the same thing

My son experienced exactly the same thing. He went on antibiotics for a slight skin infection and his glucose readings rose dramatically several days later. He's on a pump and I had to increase his basal (background) insulin to 150% - 200%.

Towards the end of the antibiotics course the rash disappeared and he felt perfectly fine but his high readings remained for 2-3 days after he finished his antibiotics course. Then suddenly he started to have hypos and I gradually had to reduce his background insulin to what it was before.

Ahh thanks for this. So it looks like it is the tablets. I finish them tonight so I will monitor the next few days carefully!🙂
