Keepers at Edinburgh Zoo have trained Nala to receive insulin injections every day, however she had also received a glucose monitor to assess her dosage which can be observed through a phone app.

I've heard of dogs and cats being diabetic but that's a new one.

I suspect there are many more cats and dogs than anteaters so we hear about cats and dogs much more. (I'm pretty sure people have used sensors on cats and dogs with some success.)

I don’t understand how it monitors her remotely. It said the keepers keep hold of the phone but surely they aren’t seeing bgs remotely if the phone isn’t with the anteater?

She's using a Dexcom G6. If my phone is, say charging in the bedroom, I can still read my BG on my watch if I'm I'm in the lounge. I think the range of the transmitter (the grey area you can see on the sensor) is 20ft, so you don't need to go near her to get a reading. Libre users, note this and weep.

Which is partly why they used a Dexcom rather than a Libre, I'm sure. (I've read about Libre being used on pet cats and dogs because they're easier to get close to.)

Presumably anything with a pancreas can become diabetic, which must be pretty much all mammals?

Surely the keeper isn't always within 20ft of her though?

Good grief, have you seen what else they sell? That’s one treat I’d happily turn down
People keep trying to make eating insects & worms trendy, and so far the world has had the sense to ignore them 🙂

When I was at work I had to order edible insects for an undergraduate project, the company was called Crispy Critters.
