Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I'm a 41year old mum to 2 ten year olds and have been diabetic type 2 for approx 2 years. I am a hopeless diabetic rubbish with meds (metformin) and hopeless with the diet I'm currently about 5 stone overweight. I don't often test my bs but over the last couple of days i've tested on waking and it was 12.3 yesterday and 12.7 this morning. I know i need to take control of things but to be honest i don't feel ill so don't feel the need....does that make sense. I am tired all the time and thirsty which i know are signs of the diabetes. Can anybody recommend any good reads or resources that may help me to understand this a little better.

Hi Sam, welcome to the forum 🙂 You probably feel fine at those levels because your body has got used to them, but as you say you really do need to get to grips with things and get them down to more normal numbers. Have a look at the 'Useful Links' thread - there are some very good sources of information there that will help you to understand how best to approach things and learn to manage your diabetes well. I would pay particular attention to Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter, and would also recommend getting Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker. Even though you are not new to diabetes, it's not a bad idea to start off as though you are, with a new determination to succeed 🙂

You'll get lots of help and support here - why not join in with the Weight Loss Group section, it can help to motivate you by sharing your experiences with others who are in the same boat, or who are on the way to improving their life and health. No question is silly here, so please ask anything that may be bothering you and we'll use our collective brains to help you out! 🙂

welcome to the forum x have a good look around and remember no question is regarded silly here...you may not feel ill ...but being tired all the time and thirsty isnt fun either ...what meds are you on ?

Welcome to the forum sammi. Being thirsty is a sign of blood sugars being a bit on the high side and it's not nice is it? I'm not type 2, but I'm sure someone will be along to give you some advice and support on coping with type 2. Take care with best wishes Sheena

Hi Sam and welcome to the forums.

You say you are useless with metformin. It can have some unpleasant effects. If you are on the standard metformin ask if you can change to Glucophage also known as Modified release metformin. It tends to be better tolerated than the standard type.

Hi Sammi 🙂

I used to be really poorly controlled, but I managed to get myself on track with some help.
If I can do it, you definitely can LOL 🙂

Good luck, and I hope you find all the help and support you need 🙂

Hi Sammi and welcome to the forums,

I agree with what others have said in that feeling tired and thirsty are signs of high blood sugar levels. If you can get your levels down those symptoms should ease. You say you are bad with your Metformin. Do you mean the side effects or that you keep forgetting to take them? And what sort of diet advice have you been given?

Northener has given you some excellent links to look at. Other than those, the best advice I can give you for information is this forum. Lots of experiences, wisdom and advice on here. Also ask about everything you need or want to know. XXXXX

Welcome to the forum Sam 🙂

Hi Sammi, welcome to the forum. I think you have made a big step in the right direction by finding this forum; take your time, have a read around the posts and ask away if you need help.🙂

Hi Sammi,

Welcome to the forum. Have you been having regular HBA1C tests at the GP during the 2 years you've been diagnosed and if so, has the GP given you any advice on getting the levels lower?

Thanks for the welcome and the advice!!

@Northerner have downloaded Maggie Daveys letter and am having a read in bed tonight when i can concentrate!

@Blythspirit I'm bad with the Metaformin for both reasons really, i take get side effects and give up, then try again a few weeks later...I tend to feel worse with them.

@Klocky I've had 2 HBa1c tests since i was diagnosed in August 2009 not sure if thats good or bad. I was diagnosed 2 weeks before moving then got lost in the system for a while at my new practice.

Thanks again...as of Monday I'm joining the weight loss group so fingers crossed

Hi Sammi, welcome to the best site for Diabetes you are ever likely to find!! I can say that as I don't run it so can't be blamed for being biased lol. I am so glad that you have asked about your problem. I really don't want to scare you but please, please try as hard as you can to get your bloods down. You may not feel bad but the swings that you get in your bloods and the constant highs mean that it may be damaging your eyes, kidneys, heart and circulation. I am so glad that you have not had it for that long as you will be fine and dandy. I had quite a few years of high bloods and I thought I was ok but now I have my sugars well controlled I am feeling better than I ever did and you will too. There are always times that we all don't controll properly but you are obviously switched on and have come to find out some more info. There is so much on this site it will take you ages to read it but it is all worth it. Hope to keep reading your posts and always ask if you don't know something, nothing is ever silly. I still learn things from here and I have had diabetes type 1 for 46 years. x

Good luck with the weight loss group 🙂

A very late welcome to the forum Sam.

Losing that 5st will be the single best thing you could do for yourself (or even just 2st of it may help significantly).

For myself, I've lost nearly 4st since diagnosis in Oct 2009 and am all the better for it.

Good luck,

Andy 🙂
