Another question about high BS readings

I have yet another question! i tend to get a high reading at least once a week as i lead a hectic social life and eat out often. When i'm at home i tend to be OK but sometimes if i go out for a meal, sometimes my post-meal, 2 hour reading can be up to 11.3 (not all the time though, i have eaten out and it's been as low as 7.8) but what i wonder is, if i get this high reading at least once a week, do you think it is damaging for me? i don't quite understand what the damaging issues are with glucose level readings ie is it more dangerous if they are high and remain high say after 2, 3 or 4 hours post-meal or is it not so much of a concern if the 'high' level drops down quite quickly afer 3 or 4 hours (ie by bedtime). I hope this doesn't sound too confusing!

The odd high wont do any harm if you have good control the rest of the time. We all have highs sometimes.

When we eat out it is difficult to avoid all those nice things, so enjoy your treat, but where possible try to choose low carb options.

Since we are all different, the normal range is different for all of us. I'm sure there will be plenty of other advice along soon

Hi Carina.

I think this web page Healthy Blood Sugar Targets might be useful.

To be honest I try my best to keep my numbers down but I don't get too wound up over the occasional blip. If the trend goes up then I'd hassle my doctor like a shot.

The thing you can learn from testing is that if you had a meal and your BG was say 10, then you could look at the ingredients and decide what you could cut back on portion wise. I learned (and we're all different) is two rounded desert spoons of rice wont send me too high but three will.

I think that an occasional high reading or two won't hurt eg if I had a bit of wedding cake when I get hitched to the other half.

thanks for the advice. Yes i am learning that if i have that 'little bit extra' on my plate it gives me a higher BS reading but generally i am learning what i can eat in moderation, most of the time. When i go out for a meal and i fancy a dessert, i tend to share one with my partner which helps because i am not denying myself, yet i am not going overboard. It is very difficult when like most people i love my food and the fact that i can't eat as much as i used to does get me down sometimes but it's something i have to keep a control over, i wish they would find a cure for diabetes :-(

Normally my 2 hour post-meal readings vary between 7.8 - 8.3 but when i sometimes go out for a meal or function my 2 hour reading has been say 11.3 or 10.2 and then when i test again on the 3 hour mark it has dropped back down considerably to say 7.3. If i get this happening say once a week or maybe once a fortnight, do i take it that although not good, it's not going to be too damaging? obviously if the level wasn't dropping back down then it would be a concern and i would then go and see my DN/GP but this has not been happening thank goodness. I am getting better in my food choices when i socialise so in time i will know what i can eat/avoid.

HI, perhaps next time you have an appointment, you can ask what your individual targets should be. Mine are: less than 7.5 HbA1c, pre-breakfast 5.5 - 8, pre lunch/evening meal 4 - 7, pre bed 6 - 8, 2 hrs after meals less than 11.

Each person may vary within and outside of the usual recommended limits, so it is important to find out what yours are. I think general lifestyle might make a difference too? Good luck.

My DN/GP have not asked me what my levels are and all the DN said to me was, see you in 6 months time, so they are obviously just looking at the
HbA1c result so i am only getting my targets based on the NICE guidelines for Type 2 and material i have read on the net. I just test my fasting glucose and my 2 hour post-meal in the evenings.

Hi Carina,

the NICE guidelines are probably a good think to aim for, lacking any personal ones. If you're worried, you coud ask your next time around or give your GP/DN a call. Congrats on your HbA1c! Got my test on Friday, and got a feeling it's going to be higher than my last one 😱
