Hi All,

Permission to join the forum please.......

I have just been diagnosed with diabetes, Type as yet unknown, hopefully should find out tommorow. I have now been doing prik tests since last friday when they gave me my glucose monitors. Anyone else in the St Neots/Huntingdon area?

Regards,

Haggis.

Welcome to the group, Haggis, sorry to hear about the DX though you do sound upbeat!!!

We are a very friendly group, feel free to chat about anything.

Hi Haggis Welcome.
The guys here oops musnt forget the gals, have helped me through some rough times. Feel free to ask questions we will do our best to help.
Oh and it's not all doom and gloom here either.

Trying not to get down about it. not a lot I can do about it other than to try to manage it the best I can. I know I have a lot to learn. Going to my Diabetic clinic for the first time tommorow. Didn't even suspect that I had it. it was only an unexpected visit to A & E for somthing unrelate and they did a BG test and got a result of 18. Meet the Diabetes consultant on friday and the Diabetic nurse who walked into the room with a carrier bag saying " I've got some goddies for you". Gueesed straight away it was some BG meters.

Sounds like you are lucky, many people in the UK have to either beg for a meter or buy their own (or both as they will never give you enough test strips)

Hi and welcome to the forum from an oddball MODY!

Welcome to the forum, Haggis. I used to live near St. Neots, in a small village called Duloe. So know your area very well. Moved to Chatteris now.

Almost making me homesick, grew up in Bishop's Stortford, many a weekend driving around with my Dad setting up/verifying treasure hunts in the area just south of Huntingdon/Cambridge area

Just been to see the consultant this afternoon. and it looks like it is Type 2. he is just awaiting a few more blood results to confirm it. He has priscribed me 2x 500mg Metformin a day. Anything I should watch out for?

A lot of people on Metformin have gastro-intestinal issues, perhaps make sure you are near a toilet for the first few weeks. I was started on this dose but had no issues, they will probably increase your dose after a month or so

Thats great, as I am a truck driver not many toilets on the M6........I have been told 1 a day for a week then step it up to 2.

Yes that is the recommendation, and it is supposed to cause less problems. Though some doctors prescribe the max straight away.

Welcome to the forum. I hope that the new Medication has a good result for you. I'm now in my 46th year of diabetes and it's not too bad 🙂

Hi and welcome, was diagnosed 7 weeks ago type 2, finally got to see my d nurse yesterday and now on 850 metformin x2 a day, hope all goes well for you.

Welcome aboard Haggis, hope the Metformin works well for you, you'll get used to the whole diabetes thing pretty quickly, it's not what I'd call fun but it's not so bad when you get used to it 🙂

Hiya Haggis.🙂 Welcome to the forum.🙂 You sound like you're calmly taking everything in your stride - good for you. 😛

Hello Haggis, a whopping great big welcome from me too. It is good that you can be so upbeat about the condition. It really does not need to be life restricting and providing you treat it with respect and more or less follow the rules then you should be good with stuff. At least I hope you are are. This is a fantastic forum and some of the people on here are absolute superstars life throws some of them some pretty crappy stuff and they just battle through it. I find them truly inspiring and am sure that you will too 😎

Thanks for the nice welcome folks, The way it has been presented to me by all the medical proffesionals I have met so far has been quite plesent. Not to restrictive, just adjust the diet a bit, cut down on sugar and carbs seems to be the main point, along with try to lose a bit of weight, which hopefully I wil do with cutting down the sugar and carbs. trying to pick up on the exercise a bit, I think that will be the hardest with my work/home life balance. but I will do what I can. I have already found this site to be useful for those q's that you forget to ask the d nurse or the Doctor that arn't worth pestering them with a phoncall for. I have looked into the wareabouts of my local support group, unfortunatly it clashes with my parental responcibilities so you lot will be my support group wether you like it or not. So I look forward to you all guiding me along this diversion in my pathway through life.
