Another carb not for me. Had a small jacket potato with chicken & tomotoes for dinner - not very exciting I know but filling. My 1hr before reading was 5.1; 1hr later it went to 8.5 (I though whoop whoop); 2hrs later its 9.9. I guess I need to up the salad and veg....:(

Amanda x :(

Jacket potatoes can be a problem for a lot of people, unfortunately it sounds like you are one of them Amanda. Might be worth repeating the meal and test though, just to make sure. If you have cheese on the potato this should lower the rate at which it digests (due to the fat in the cheese), so this might help if you don't want to give them up. 🙂

Another nightmare, i am now having sweet potato once a month with tuna x

I'm confused these are my testing results

8pm 5.1
9.01 8.5
10.01 9.9
10.14 8.4
10.15 9.0
10.17 8.3

I know it was an excessive test but wanted to see if my readings had gone done hence checking the 10.14 and the 10.15pm. Well confused....
I washed my hands in warm water for each test and used a different finger.

P.S. Potato was plain; no filling or spread

Amanda x 🙂

Steff - I can't cope with em either except sometimes I succumb as they really are a fave. Or TBH, it's just the skins I adore and probably wouldn't be that bad if i could only control meself! LOL

Remember that there can be a 10% variation in test results either way, so all those readings would fall within that. You were falling back after 10 pm, so that is good, and although the 9.9 might seem high it's not terrible, so not so bad at all really! 🙂 Testing a minute apart probably doesn't actually tell you anything useful - I would only test every half hour at most 🙂

I agree, half hour testing is the maximum I have ever done and that was only once when I wanted to get some detailed info on how I reacted to my porridge.

I've only ever done pre meal and 2hr post meal tests normally (but also understand why 1hr post meal readings are useful).

Hi Andy, so you don't test 1hr and 2hrs after a meal? Just before and 2hrs after. Amanda x 🙂

Pretty much. So long as I was within the ranges given to me at diagnosis, I was quite happy.

In reality, I only tested once a day at different times (i.e. pre meal one day, 2hrs post meal the next). That worked well for me because, for the most part, my levels behaved themselves (there were exceptions early on though .. but a quick walk usually sorted those!).

Andy 🙂

I've seen my numbers yo-yo by 1 point either way 2 hrs after a meal. So long as they come down, that's the main thing.

Unfortunately, I can't tolerate any potato with skin on, pity, as I love a baked potato or skins!!

Donna 😉

Some good news - I know its not a carb dinner but I had a pork stir-fry tonight with egg noodles (home made). Immediately before testing my reading was 4.5, 1hr later 7.00, 2hrs later 7.3 - didn't or don't need to test any later than 2hrs do I? It was yummy although husband missed out the soy-souce...🙄

Sounds nice Amanda, readiongs are good too, wonder what they would have been without the noodles, although, i think we need some carb.

PS. I dont seem to do well with even new boiled potatos, just 2, but a handful of oven chips have no effect on my BG. Odd

Oven chips are relatively low GI I believe, as the fat delays conversion to glucose. Do you leave the skin on your new potatoes?

I was gutted about my baked potato last night; was really hoping it wouldn't spike but it did...:( At least by testing I know what I should be avoiding; porridge; allbran; baked beans; baked potatos - poached egg on bergen bread is ok for me although I don't want to eat too many eggs so experimenting with other foods - going to try granola and natural yoghurt tomorrow (if hubby hasn't had all the yoghurt 😛). Will let you know how that goes. Amanda x 🙂

If baked potato spike does this mean new potato's will also; also should you leave the skins on? Amanda x 🙂

Potatoes are a bit strange I find. Older floury ones hit like a train, waxy new ones much gentler. I have a bit more bother with jackets , but copable with as long as not too big. Wedges, roasties and chips are better (though can need careful dose splitting)
