Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi All,

Another One is a Newbie from the East Midlands region of England. Diagnosed yesterday with type II by a local GP, after fresh blood test results. An interesting part happened in the cabinet where a doctor cannot explain why they didn{t make any action even they saw in the system, that probably I have) or will have soon= type II ... over four years ago. "Someone in this practice is not too good in practice", I said. And the doctor wasn't very happy with that comment.

Yesterday was tested as well positive for COVID-19, so my diabetic treatment physically will start in the middle of next week (means the cool stuff to hurt my fingers and bleed a few times per day for a longer time), apart from throwing out some of my cupboard food resources at the evening.

The year 2020 was the worst I ever had (for many reasons), the year 2021 was crazy for me, and the year 2022 looks challenging. Catching a better diet than before will not be super easy - the doctor said:
- You must stop eating: sugar, honey, bread, pasta, rice, cakes, sweets, cookies, biscuits, chocolate, milk smoothie and a few other things (you will find it on diabetes(dot)org(dot)uk. More fish, chicken...
- Well, I'm a vegetarian for almost three decades so, no meat, fish, seafood, animal fat, and other things.
- So... I don't know, maybe chickpeas, lentils...

yeah, Welcome to the Year of Fun.

Sorry your post is a bit confusing as you have put under your avatar, gestational but then you are talking about being Type 2.
Perhaps you could say what your HbA1C is that has given you your diagnosis, it will be a number over 48mmol/mol. and have you been given any medication.
Your doctor is right about having to make some changes to your diet but the blanket stop eating all those things you mention is perhaps a bit extreme. Yes the sugar, honey, cakes, biscuits, cookies, chocolate and possibly the smoothies but rand being very careful about your intake of bread, rice, pasta and some fruits. but people do find acceptable substitutes. Meat and fish are low carb foods for may people but there are many vegetarian folk who manage perfectly well if they eat eggs, cheese, dairy, with plenty of veg and salads and fruits like berries.
There are quite a few veggie recipes in the food forum and searching for low carb or keto veggie recipes on the internet will give you plenty of options.
Pulses are something that some people can tolerate and others can't.
Please do ask any specific questions one you get your head around it. The Learning Zone is a good place to start and this link you might also find helpful. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/

Hi @TJK, I'm also a T2 and a vegetarian (lacto-ovo) of 30 years. I eat nuts, tofu, soya/TVP, chillis, eggs, seitan/mock duck, quorn, cheese, soups, lentils, chickpeas, curry, and lots of other stuff too. I've adapted my diet to reduce the carbohydrate in it and still found plenty to eat.
Sorry to hear about your covid, it seem really prevalent at the moment.
Let us know if you have any specific questions you'd like answering, Sarah

THNX, Yes, the system chose gestational, I just fixed it. If I only would know what level of HbA1C is before diagnosis, then I would ask. Sadly doctor said: "This is bad, very very bad" and literally nothing else about details, so I will wait for that info for days after Easter. Anyway, I'm in isolation, a few days don't really matter.

I'm not afraid of diabetes, nor of changing my diet. It is anyway much light than five years ago, and even without special changes, I lost over twenty kilos, and vegie, sometimes vegan diet is natural for me. In fact, I'm almost not using sugar in clear form (like for tea or coffee) for over twenty years, however consuming it in a different way. Yes, I've seen the link you posted. THNX.

THNX. Covid is only temporary - not having the ability to smell for now (since morning), and need to cook something for easter tomorrow - as I mention before > it will be a fun year 🙂
I just have had a very similar diet for years (more Quorn after moving to England) and much more seitan before (not super easy to find in more areas.

Knowing what your HbA1C is will give you an idea of how much work you will need to do but it looks as if you have made a good start by loosing weight and already have some good ideas for low carb veggie meals. What is seitan, I have not heard of it.
What country are you from, there are quite a few people here either from other countries or who live overseas.

What is seitan, I have not heard of it.
Hi Leadinglights, seitan is a meat substitute made from gluten. Because of how the wheat protein is washed and plaited, it's got quite a meaty texture, and most of the carbs are washed out.
I've had it in Chinese food, and I used to make mock duck pancakes with wheat pancakes, spring onions, cucumber batons and plum sauce, but that's quite carby now!
They sell it in cans at Chinese supermarkets, so it's handy to keep in for adding to stir fries (5.8g of carbs per 100g, so not too bad) if you're vegetarian or vegan, or "veggie curious"!

Hey there.. fellow east midlander with a similar story. I was diagnosed (with what type we still don’t know) when I was 43. 2 years ago. Had prediabetic numbers at 40. Wasn’t told about this until I actually hit diabetic numbers. When I queried this I was told, well you didn’t look diabetic !!!

the reception people can tell you the test results, or if you register with the NHS app you can view them yourself. I agree GPs have been lacking in the last 5 years. Welcome by the way. I got my diagnosis by text message!

Ha, Diagnosis via message, heard about it before. Seems to be practical for some doctors, not necessarily the best way for patients.

Welcome to the forum @TJK 🙂
