Hi Jim, welcome to the forum
🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis
Did the symptoms come on quickly, or had you been feeling them for some time and they just got worse?
You're certainly not alone, and neither do you need to despair - diabetes can be a complicated condition to deal with and infuriating at times, but with the right knowledge and application it can be controlled well, and you may even find that adapting to its requirements may end up with you feeling much happier and healthier than you may have done for some time! It's true! So, the frst thing to do is to get up to speed with the current thinking about how best to approach it.
Have you been given any medication for your diabetes? I would suggest reading
Jennifer's Advice and
Maggie Davey's letter for starters, and a copy of
Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker would be a very useful addition to your library. Ideally, you need to test your blood sugar levels in order to monitor how you tolerate different foods, and also to build up a pattern of areas you can address to get things under control. Start a food diary and include the amount of carbs in everything you eat and drink eat day (either from the packets or using scales, or getting a book such as
Collins Gem - Carb Counter. Don't worry, you won't need to do this forever, it's just so you can get an understanding of your current diet and where there may be places that you need to reduce portion size or substitute with less carby items.
Do you exercise much? A daily walk or run will work magic in increasing yur insulin sensitivity and helping you keep your levels under control - whatever you prefer.
