Type 2
After the disaster with baked beans it now appears that porridge is sending my blood sugars sky high. Prior to breakfast of porridge made with water and some blueberries this morning my level was 6.3 (even though I woke up an hour before to 5.4); 45mins later my sugars were 10.2 😱 A 45min walk to work lowered my sugars an hour later to 5.7.

So 2 x low GI are bad for me. Need some suggestions for breakfast.......

Going to try the Bergen bread with lunch of tuna salad and a lemon and lime sugar free jelly so hoping it was the beans and not the bread :(

Confused about food

Diagnosed Typ2 August '11; D&E (3 months).

How much porridge did you eat? Before you dismiss it as a breakfast, it could be worth trying, say, 3/4 or 2/3 of what you ate.

Ouch poor you!

Although a lot of Type 2?s tend to avoid lots of carb?s in the morning. I found that anything over 10-15g Carb in my breakfast would send my levels up. Although it took Muesli and Oat-so-Simple to send my BG up the way yours have gone up. You have really very good fasting and pre-meal levels. Hopefully the Burgen will give you a much better response.

You said once that your brother is Type 2. Is there anyone else in your family that is? Such as your parents or grandparents?

I tend to have natural yoghurt with walnuts mostly for breakfast. I need to try test yoghurt with a low gi fruit (blueberries or similar) sometime to see how I respond to that.

If I want something different I usually either have a slice of burgen toasted with peanut butter or make myself a scrambled egg. As a special treat occasionally I?ll do myself bacon, eggs and mushroom 🙂

Hi there,

I had 4 table-spoons and made it up with water. Last time I made porridge with milk and my sugars we're above 9. I thought I'd add some blue-berries this time but it sent my sugar's higher. Amanda x

Hi Mark, I found out a few weeks ago my granddad (dad's side) had diabetes. I always wondered where my brother got it from....😱 I am finding the food confusing but am testing immediately before and an hour; 2 hrs later. My pre-lunch was 4.7 I've just had tuna salad with a slice of burgen bread; lemon and lime sugar free jelly and a handful of cherries (I'm steadily losing weight) so will test in 20mins (this is the 1hr) and at 2.30pm. If sugars are low I'll try Burgen bread for breakfast tomorrow but will cut out porridge. Amanda x 🙂

I really enjoy porridge in the morning, I use the original flavour oat so simple sachets I find the portion size perfect and just sweeten with a bit of sweetner. I can then get away with a banana straight after.

I can't do porridge either Amanda. It may be low GI for many, but not me it seems... shame really, as I quite liked it in the winter :(

Have you tried omelette? Bacon and eggs? Frittata?

If you find you can cope with Burgen, then adding peanut butter as Mark suggested might slow the absorption still further.

Alan S (from Australia) has a page of suggestions which might give you some ideas too http://loraldiabetes.blogspot.com/2006/10/breakfasts.html

Different things affect diffeent people in different ways, so it is trial and error. You may find somethngs that don't give you a high reading will give someone else a high reading.

Its all a learning process with diabetes once you have tryed a food you will know how it effects your levels, I was ok with porriadge to start with but then after a few months i noticed a pattern and I was getting spikes,I know on a morning theres not alot of time for some people but I now have bacon and poached/scrambled egg its scrummy fills me up and aint too carby.

I'd definitely recommend natural yoghurt with something. Because I have the luxury of bolusing insuln for my breakfast I have natural yoghurt with oat granola, but this can be quite high in carbs depending on which one you buy. Try it with a mix of fruits, nuts & seeds - hopefully you can find a combination that suits you.

I've heard many type 2s swearing by eggs for breakfast, too.

i have the porridge problem tooo ...in fact most cerals not to good for me :( i generally have an egg sarnie or grilled bacon sarnie on seeded ...
