Hi Steve from Hull here, 55 years old just diagnosed and been given Metformin. Need to get my head around what I can eat and drink. As per a lot on here I guess, I have a huge sweet tooth but thats gotta change!

Hi,
Well you are at the right place. Please lease feel free to ask as many questions as you like (even the same question). I was diagnosed in July T2 and put on Metformin. The food thing was made easier by keeping a food diary and dare I say blood glucose testing at home.At first I was rather resistant but son saw the value of it What advice have you been given by your GP? :D

Welcome @Steview555 🙂 the food thing takes a while to get your head around, it’s not just the obvious sweet things that we need to avoid but all carbohydrates will also have an impact, the worst culprits are rice, pasta, potatoes and bread. Fruit is something else you need to be careful with, especially tropical fruits / juices as they are also high in natural sugars, a rule of thumb is no more than two small pieces a day. Veg will vary, root veg is higher in sugar so use sparingly or avoid, peas and sweet corn are best avoided but cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, courgette or mushrooms are great 😛 Eggs, cheese, bacon and high meat sausages or burgers are also ok as is most meat. Many of use eat Burgen bread which is a low carb soya and linseed option. I started convinced I would starve to death 😱 and now I love my new way of eating 😛.
Testing your blood sugar is key to working out what foods work for you, test before your meal and again around 2 hours after, ideally you don’t want a higher than 2 increase in your numbers. It’s unlikely your gp will provide a meter so you might want to consider the code free meter, it’s around £12 and has the cheapest strips at around £7 for 50.
Best advice I can give is to go make a cuppa and take some time to read up here, you will find all you need to know between the threads, absorb what you can then ask any questions you have :D

Hi Steview555, and welcome. You have come to the right place if you want to know anything. There is a lot of experience her. No question is too silly.

Hi Steve, just to welcome you to the forum 🙂.

Welcome Steve another one from Hull here. I'm 6 weeks in and still confused over food - am I eating enough carbs/not eating enough carbs. At the moment I'm reducing them and monitoring glucose levels to see what food affects them. Its such a learning curve. Good luck am sure with the help of this forum we will get there.
