Hi, Just thought I would say hello as "newbie" to the forum! Not new to diabetes unfortunately! Diagnosed at 21, so 16 years ago this May - does that tell you my age!!?? I live in Macclesfield, Cheshire if there any local diabetics on here!!

Steph x

Hi Stephie welcome to the forum, i'm sure you experiences will be much valued.

Have you done DAFNE or any similar courses?

Feel free to ask any questions 🙂

Hi Nikki! Thanks! No I havent done DAFNE and had only just heard about this last week actually whilst looking on the BDA website? Is it any good and what does it entail exactly?

Hi Stephie, welcome to the forum🙂 If you haven't heard of DAFNE before I'm guessing your knowledge is in need of an update! Would be good to hear some details about how you've gone on over the years - treatment regime, how your HbA1c is maybe?

Hi and welcome to the forum Stephie. You are amongst a good group of people here so your never alone x

What the course teaches is carb counting, so that you are abe to match you insulin doses to the carb intake of your meals. And some other general education at the same time, but the ability to be flexiable in dosing is the main things it centres on.
You might be doing it anyway or have been taught it when first diagnosed, if carb exchange and the like was still popular then.
You do need to be on a long acting basal insulin (levemir, lantus, insultard) and a fst acting bolus insulin (novorpaid, humalog, aprida) to be able to do it though.

Hi, to be honest, I seem to get on fine! My last HbA1C was 7.4. Im a good, healthy eater, exercise and adjust my insulin according to what Im doing/eating etc. I suppose I just "get on with it"! I go for my regular check ups twice a year, i used to see the local diabetic nurse at the hospital when my sugars have been slightly high but other than that I have my check ups at my doctors who are great and have a clinic there. I do have background retinopathy which hasnt really changed since I was diagnosed with it around 4 years ago which is good (I think!) but any advice always welcome!

Yes I am on novorapid and lantus (lantus I found to be fantastic, changed my life!)... I dont really look too much at carb intake, I just eat healthy in general and feel I know how my body will react to insulin. I seem to be sensitive to insulin in that I dont need much at all, 14 units with lantus and then vary my novorpaid as to what Im eating etc.

Hello and welcome, you'll find this place much better than the real world:D

How much is the DAFNE course?

Your clinic should be able to get you on it and it will be free. If they don't do DAFNE in your area there ought to be some other education course available from your PCT as they have to provide something. Even if you have been diagnosed a long time, as you have, the experience can really help and it's nice to meet other diabetics 'in real life' too!

Hi Stephie, welcome to the forum.
