hi I was looking through searches on net and came across this site..and glad i have

I been glucose intolerant for yrs and became full diabetic about 7 months ago..i was on diet only first and although i lost a stone my sugars went up so i was put on metformin

Uggh is a mild word for it..it took weeks for the nausea and diarrhea to stop..and that was on one 500mg tablet a day even the gluchophage.they then increased me to two as my sugarss till going up.but then had to put me down to one and half ordinary metformin..about 3 weeks on and i still cant up it back to two due to constant diarrhea about an hour after i take my med..im ok after the half tablet in morning
im even wonering if i may actually feel better on ordinary metformin and not the gluchopage i take per evening meal

i havent had much help i think from gp and nurse..they seen me a few weeks ago and despite my sugars going up they said wont see me again until after christmas..my readings are about 9-10 in mornings and 2 hours after meals are from 11 up to 15.

i just dont know what to do and find im worrying an awful lot about it all.im trying low carb but nurse told me of as she thinks its put my colesterol up as i been eating more cheese and drinking more milk less bread and potatoes although nurse told me to make sure im having them at every meal..im so confused really

i could do with some friends who understand..im scared my sugars are causing me damage but the nurse doesnt seem that woried.she said im ok could be worse but need to work towards increasing the metforim..im not sure when te diarrhea is going to stop though.she says can take a while then restart as i increase meds.i wouldnt be able to work at mo but as it is im chronic ill with M.E anyways

nice to meet you all.cant wait to get to know you.

Welcome to the forum Kukka! 🙂 Very sorry to hear about the problems with the metformin, some people are able to tolerate it better than others :( I wonder if the liquid version will be any different? If sounds like this is really affecting your quality of life, so you must be firm with your doctor and request that they take it seriously and review your medication if this continues. Try not to worry too much about your post meal rises in levels - they're not actually that big when you consider that you are starting around the 9-10 level. Once you can start reducing those fasting levels the post meal levels won't appear anywhere near as frightening! 🙂

Are you able to do much in the way of exercise? This can really help to increase your insulin sensitivity and reduce your need for medication, so it might be worth asking the doctor if there is any kind of program in your area to help you, such as free gym membership. If you're not interested in that sort of thing, a regular half hour walk will really help.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have - nothing is considered 'silly' and we'll be happy to try and help you with them! 🙂

Welcome to the forum Kukka,
Hope you feel better soon.
If you are extremely worried maybe you could make another appointment with your nurse/gp?

Welcome to the forum kukka.

Have you tried running a food log for a bit? That way you can relate your bg readings to what you ate and can then have a detailed conversation with the GP/DSN/dietician about what you can change to get an improvement in your levels.

Also, if you can get a bit of exercise each day (it doesn't have to be much) that will help too (but I know that might be difficult for you).

Andy 🙂

HI and thank you for your replies and welcomes

Im afraid im housebound..cant walk far with the M.E and spent many times bedbound.i do well if i get out at all of huse..i do struggle to kep going and walking when i can.i have been stubborn and not used my wheelchair so that my legs done give up altogether..i think since i had m.e it has pushed my sugars to the levels where its now diabetes..when i was working i was very active and walked a lot every day but now i cant : (

i started feeling vry unwell last night and tested.i had gone up to 19mmol and i was scared to go to sleep.i took an extra metformin this mornign with less food and so far no dairrhea..i wonder if taking them with less food will help me more

i do tend to be like that with antibiotics if they say take with food i often found them better on empty tum so today i only had 1 weetabix and a tablet then for T just had soup and another tablet

i only seen gp and practise nurse re my sugars and had no advice at all.they didnt even know what i could and couldnt eat.i asked about how much is safe and she said we recommend anyone just to eat normal healthy meals now and not dtress about sgar levels..only review in january if im still high but i can increase my med if i see fit.says most likely cause diarrhea with other meds too and wont give me ones that may increase my weight..i am tring diet not easy on low budget and being immobile cant burn it off me : (

im glad i found somewhere i can talk..makes me feel much better.what is bes place to post re everyday uggh problems? xx thank yu xx

Hi Kukka, sorry to hear about the ME and your mobility problems :( It really can be tough when they say 'exercise will do you good' but you are unable to. I wonder if it would be possible to get referred to a physiotherapist by your doctor - he/she may be able to give you exercises you can do from your chair, or just short routines that you can manage at home.

As for the medications, a lot of people have found that it can work better with certain types of food or portion sizes, but it does differ quite a lot between people so it's hard to say what will work best for you. It's worth reading about the GL Diet and trying to follow the ideas behind that - here are two good books that I have read that you might like to get hold of:

Don't worry about where to post too much. Most things are fine in the General Message board - if something might fit in better in another section one of the Moderators will be able to move it and leave a link behind so you don't wonder where it went! 🙂

We are all in it together here, so please ask any questions you may have, or just have a good rant or moan if things are getting on top of you! I look forward to hearing more from you 🙂

aww thank you Northener you made me feel very welcomed

I had pysio which i could not kep up with.it relapsed me.i have exercises i re and do round the house mostly stretching and such like but it wont really burn anything..i can only hope i recover from the M.e

if my glucose levels go down i may be less exhausted all the time..the M.E fatigue is made worse by any sort of exercise but the diabetes tiredness prob would be made better..if my sugars are high i have a sort of sleepinesss which i cant shake of whereas the M.e fatigue is more real aches and pains and flu like illness

i reckon if i get my sugars under control i may feel sronger and more able to do more pysio then

will go look at those books xx thanks xx

The high sugar levels will certainly be adding to your fatigue, so I hope that you are able to get used to the metformin before too long and get them more under control. One step at a time! 🙂
