Hi I'm Kathy aged 67 and recently been told I'm at high risk of diabetes. I have a lot of family members with diabetes but I've always tried to cook from scratch and est healthily so I was surprised to be told this. I have had 5 steroid Injections in the past 6 months and wondered if that could have affected the blood test. I'm starting the NHS course next week. Any thoughts?

Welcome to the forum @katybarstool

Sorry to hear you’ve been told you are at increased risk of diabetes :(

Were you told the result of your HbA1c check? This would usually be somewhere between 42 and 47 mmol/mol

Steroids can definitely raise glucose levels - are you going to be using steroids on an ongoing basis?

A bit of work looking at your diet would be worthwhile as many think they eat healthily but what may be so for a non diabetic is not if your body struggles with carbohydrates.
Have a look at this link for some comparisons and some ideas for modifying your diet. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

Dunno about steroid jabs, though I do know that steroid tablets certainly do - BUT! - any incidental illness pain or inflammation absolutely does increase the blood glucose - and as they don't give you steroid jabs unless you need them you've clearly got summat else wrong - so what is that and has it now been cured?

Hi everyone, thank you for your responses. I was only just in the range at 42 but had increased 6 points from last year. The steroid injections were for various arthritic joints. Thank you for the links. I will look into them.

I would be interested to know if the steroid jabs were effective as I have arthritis in my shoulders which drive me insane at night.

I had a steroid injection into my toe to help a Morton's Neuroma.
The arthritis pain in my knee disappeared. I knew when the steroid wore off months later as the pain in my knee also returned

Had issues in thumb joint where I was struggling to grip things, referred to physio who injected a steroid into joint, 2 years on thumb joint works fine with just occasional ache when overdoing things.

Was told might need follow on injection so might need another at some point.

Yes, it's a temporary fix for inlammatiin, rather than a cure. I've found them pretty effective fir me thumb, although they wore off after about 3 months. But the one in my knee lasted for nearly a year before it had to be redone. Either way, they brought me some relief. Xxx
