Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi everyone. I'm Jason and looking forward to conversing with you all.
I'm a newly diagnosed diabetic so learning as I go along. Though did pick up alot from a former partner who was also diabetic. I'm particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has or had neuropathy caused by diabetes as I'm suffering alot with it at the moment.

Hi Jason and welcome.

I wonder if it could just be temporary neuropathy caused by a sudden and dramatic change in BG levels now that treatment has been started or did you have neuropathy symptoms before diagnosis? The body has often got used to high BG levels pre diagnosis and nerves and blood vessels can sometimes "complain" when those high levels suddenly drop as they can, especially with insulin.... which I am assuming you are using since you have indicated that you are Type 1. Do you think that you could have had diabetes for a while before you were diagnosed?

Would you like to tell us a bit about how you came to be diagnosed and what medication they have given you?

Are you finger pricking for your BG levels or have they given you Freestyle Libre sensors?

Obviously you don't need to answer any questions if you are not comfortable divulging any information but it helps us to understand your situation and perhaps give more appropriate responses.

Hi. I've had neuropathy for about 4 months, diagnosed with diabetes 6 weeks ago. I know I've had it for a few years un treated though.

I'm actually awaiting type 1 or 2 diagnoses but it looks like I'm type 2, to be confirmed by consultant.

So yes I'm finger pricking and on 2 insulins. I'm on 3rd medication for neuropathy and awaiting the 3 week time frame for that to kick in.

I've actually just been out and bought some cbd capsules so ever hopeful that they will work to calm the pain. Really can't take this anymore, its so debilitating. Currently using pregabalin after amytriptiline and gabapentin failed.

Hope the CBD oil helps as that sounds really tough. I think @mikeyB uses it but I am not sure that it is for neuropathy in his case. I am quite sure he finds it effective though so may be able to give some input. I think the brand/strength may be relevant.
I hope that now you are on treatment for your diabetes and levels are hopefully coming down, that there will perhaps be some improvement but I think it can take a few months. I may be mistaken but I think doing as much walking as you are able is beneficial, even if it might be painful or maybe cycling on an exercise bike if you can't manage to walk. Just something to stimulate the blood flow and hopefully encourage new nerve growth.

Sorry to hear your are experiencing nerve pain :(

Do I understand the timeline right… did this came on before your diabetes diagnosis? Was it one of the things that took you to the Dr? Or have you had other symptoms of diabetes like thirst and increased urination?

I believe some forum members with neuropathy have had a degree of success with using a Tens machine as part of their pain management strategy.

Hope the pregabalin offers some relief.

Yes the timeline is correct. I suspected i had diabetes since 2017. But it was untreated up until about a couple of months ago. I went to the doctors because of the neuropathy pain. I will certainly look into a tens machine as nothing else seems to be working.

I bought some cbd capsules the other day but I suppose I have to give them a chance to get into the system. Fingers crossed for that one.

I pulled my mountain bike down from the garage yesterday, going to try and do some exercise on that and see if it helps with circulation etc. Small steps.

Hope you get some clarity over your classification soon, so that your treatment plan can be optimised for the type of diabetes you have.

It would be unusual for ’classic’ T1 to remain untreated for so many years - perhaps it is one of the more slowly emerging forms like LADA, or as you suggest, perhaps one of the subtypes of T2.

Hope you can find a combination of treatments that help with your neuropathic pain - it can be so debilitating and wearing.

@Pattidevans has mentioned a ‘neuropathy cocktail’ in the past that she found effective when recovering from transient neuropathy in the past, but I can’t remember the link to it.

EDIT: Found a mention of it here

Though obviously you should discuss this with your Dr to see if it is appropriate for you before taking any supplements.

There’s a research paper reviewing the thinking behind aantioxidants for neuropathy here
