Hi a newbie here… quite excited joining hopefully will gain a better understanding and support … diagnosed T2 about a year ago, haven’t done much about it felt quite alone but am now determined to get a better understanding of this

Hi @Flo jo! Welcome to the forum.

How are you managing your T2? Are you on any medication (e.g. Metformin)?

You’ve definitely come to the right place as there’s loads of people who can give you advice on here and we’d love to hear about your own experiences too!

Hi @Flo jo, welcome to the forum and ditto to what @admc26 said!

Have a read around the different sections and get a feel for the place and ask any questions you like - we aim to please 🙂

Hi Flo jo, welcome to the forum.

I can be very daunting to receive a diabetes diagnosis but we're here to support you along this journey.

Did they tell you what your HbA1c number was? It's the result of the blood test they use to diagnose diabetes. It just helps to have a starting point so you can set some realistic goals.

I'm not sure if you're doing this already but testing your blood sugar at home is also helpful, so as not to overwhelm you with info, feel free to have a read of this page which will help you get to grip with the numbers and testing information that you'll need to know. https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/managing-your-diabetes/testing

If there's anything we can do to help, please let us know.

Hi I’ve only seen the diabetic Nurse twice have no idea what HbAIc number is, in fact I am at a loss with all this, I did mention to the nurse should I be testing my sugar levels but she said not yet …. I have been put on Sukkarto SR 2x after 2 main meals, she did say if I get my sugars down I may be able to come off them after a while, I’ve been on them nearly 3 months now have next appointment with my Nurse on Tuesday… don’t even know what these tablets are meant to do … very Ignorant when it comes to Diabeties … all I know now is the harder I try to cut out the treats the more I binge, going round in circles …. Feel quite alone with all this …. But know I’ve joined you all hopefully I’ll gain some knowledge

Have a look at the learning zone (the orange tab at the top) as there is a lot of information which you can look through at your own pace and that might put you in a good position to ask some relevant questions when you see your nurse. One important thing to ask is what your HbA1C is as that will give an indication of how much you need to do to get your levels down. It will be a number probably above 48mmol/mol as that would be the levels that led to your diagnosis. It is a measure of the average blood glucose level over a 3 month period.
The medication you have been given is a slow release form of metformin which helps the body use the insulin you are producing more effectively but you still need to make dietary changes for it to have much impact.
Many people find that home testing is critical in enabling them to make good food choices and puts them in control of their diabetes though not advocated by most G Ps or diabetic nurses which in my mind is very shortsighted but it seems they would rather push people onto the medication route (sorry my hobby horse).
I should make a list of questions you have when you have your appointment as it is easy to forget something you meant to ask.
