Hello all. I was told that I am hypothyroid 5 weeks ago and that I am t2d 2weeks ago. Have been started on both levothyroxin and metformin. My hbc1a was 53.
I have just got a glucometre and my highest bs has been 6_4, but I have only been doing this for a couple of days!!
Would love to hear if anyone else has both conditions and have already found the forum very helpful. Thank you all.

Hi Welcome. We do have people here who have both conditions, I'm sure they will be along soon.
Feel free to ask questions we'll do our best to help.

Hello Kentoldlady & a warm welcome to our supportive forum - sorry to see you've been diagnosed as having diabetes but we are a friendly bunch of souls here ready and willing to answer any amount of questions you may have, so feel free.

I'm Type2 and suffer with Hypothyroidism too and currently take 125mcg Levothyroxine daily. Thyroid disease is common in the general population and the prevalence increases with age - not only that but Hypothyroidism is more common in older women. I was dx (diagnosed) at the age of 55yrs. I believe there's a higher than normal prevalence of thyroid disorders in Type2's with Hypothyroidism being the most common disorder. Also, poorly controlled diabetes - with or without its complications - may produce changes in thyroid function so do have regular blood tests to keep on top of your Hypothyroidism.

Good to see you are self monitoring your bgls 🙂(Blood glucose levels) 6.4 is a good number & in range - but with patience - time - and by reducing your intake of carborhydrates - you will be able to reduce this number even further - but please don't worry if your levels remain in the 6's - many on here would give their right arm for a bgl of 6.4 🙂

I was dx Type2 in April 2016 but I didn't join this forum until January last. It was the best thing I ever did. I have learned so much about diabetes in general but more particularly about MY diabetes. Diabetes is an individual thing so what suits one doesn't always suit another as you will learn given time.
We normally test our waking bgl:-
a) before getting out of bed each morning
b) before each meal
and
c) 2hrs post meals.
This will not only determine how much glucose is in your blood - but will give you an indication as to whether you are tolerant of what food/s you have eaten - or in some cases, not. You can then make adjustments to your diet. But the motto here is to test test and test again.

Good luck - take care and do please stay in touch as to your progress.x

Many thanks to all of you. There is so much to learn and at the moment I feel as though I have a double load. On the plus side, I do feel better on just the tiny amount of levothyroxin I am currently on and have already lost some weight.
I plan to do the lchf way of eating. Are there specific sites anyone would recommend?
Also, I am testing on a metre that a friend gave me but I cannot figure out how to clear the memory. It's a it's a glucomen and she used to keep it at work. Does anyone know if it's possible to reset?
So many questions!!

Hi again, I have opened a new thread on your behalf regarding your meter query. You will find it in the general message board thread - hopefully you will receive responses - the title of the thread is called :- Can meters be re-set?

Also there is a link which you will find very helpful - it's title is:- Useful links for people new to diabetes. You will find this post at the top of the list in Diabetes Support Forums.

Good to hear you are to try the LCHF diet - its a good beginning so hope it works for you. Why not visit the thread What did You eat yesterday? You will see what meals we are eating. In the Food/Carb queries & recipes one of our members @Mark Parrott has posted many generous meal ideas on this thread including low carb cake recipes + much more very tasty foodies which you can enjoy without fear of raising your bgls - but you must remember to test post meals to determine if you are tolerant of them.

Well done on losing the weight you have so early into your diabetes - if you would like to join in with others similarly trying to lose weight then why not go to the thread The Weight Loss Group which you will also find in the Diabetes Support Forum. Good luck & take care x

Google "Diet Doctor", that's a great informative site (the thing I don't like is the premium content side of it.
Also google for "Jason Fung", "Stephen Phinney" & "Tim Noakes" some very informative Youtube lectures on LCHF

BTW, a warm welcome to the group

Hello and welcome to the forum Kentoldlady. 🙂 I'm Type 2 but already had Hypothyroidism for a good while and currently take 125mcg Levothyroxine daily as do my two sisters and Mum.

Thank you all. I have had a look at some of the sites and found them very helpful.
I have also done a bit of digging around the family medical tree and found that most of my female relatives ( cousins and aunts) on mums side are also hypothyroid, with a liberal sprinkling of t2d. Some overweight and some not. We also have t1, multiple sclerosis and some other autoimmune nasties.

Ho hum!!!
