Just to introduce myself, only just joined. My son is 21 and has had type 1 for 7 years. I have struggled to cope allalong but never felt confident enought to join anything like this. Im hoping it will help to chat to other mums etc in the same position. Even though my son is now an adult its hard to switch off!

Good afternoon Carol and a warm welcome to the forum, have yourself a browse around the site they is a parents section, we have some amazing parents on here who have to go through the daily trails and tribulations that diabetes brings so im sure you will have gone through similier things.

Hi Carol, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm pleased that you plucked up the courage to join! We have a lot of parents who can relate to your situation, plus quite a few people of your son's age, so perhaps he might want to join in too. Diabetes can be an isolating condition - even with the support of friends and family, it can be difficult for them to really relate to what you have to go through on the 'front line', so it's good to be able to be amongst people who have or are experiencing it too.

I'd recommend getting hold of a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas - you may be able to pick up a copy in your library. It would be useful for all the family to read - I have benefited from it even though I was diagnosed at age 49! (Still young at heart 🙂)

hi carol! i'm 21 too (although i turn 22 on friday eek).

welcome to the forum! as everyone has said there are plenty of other parents on here. do you think your son would like to join? there are a few of us around his age on here!

Hi Carol and welcome to the forum.🙂

My son is 12 and on a pump - so I will be interested in any advice you have regarding the teenage years and how to handle things along the way. It might be a good idea if your son could join too as there a lots of people around his age that he could chat with - they are all lovely and helpful so you dont need to worry about being shy or anything.🙂Bev

Thankyou

What a welcome! Im so glad I have joined. I suppose I felt almost embarrassed to admit that it is hard to cope with. It is so lovely to hear everyone else feels the same and I am not alone. I havent told my son I have joined, but I will broach the subject and maybe suggest he joins in. Im sure he would enjoy talking to people of a similar age in the same position. Thanks once again everyone, you have given me a lifeline.

Hi Carole, welcome to the forum.

Hi Carole,
I'm new too. Like you, i'm not one to do this kind of thing and more the point never have a great deal of free time. I have found though there's lots of support and info on here for diabetics/parents/carers etc etc. Only have to be short and sweet as well! I think its great.
Bernie x
