Hi there,

I registered this time last year when I was diagnosed as T2, but like many other threads in this room, the log-in details went the way of the big computer inthe sky!

I started off really well and got my HbA1c down to 6.2 but in the last 7 months or so it has crept up, and I admit to not really taking care of my health or making good choices - I'd been burying my head in the sand big time. Monday my HbA1c results were 9.1! The doc wanted to put me on Metformin, but I promised him I would get it back down to 6.2 in 3 months if he ripped up the prescription... So I have until early March to prove to him that I'm not a lost cause.

I joined the gym yesterday and have a 7am induction today. I HATE gyms! But I need to take this seriously. I have an Ap on my ipod tracking weight, exccercise levels, bg and bp. I am finding it very hard at the moment and remember what a supportive community this is.

Moaning aside, I am also very much looking forward to Christmas!

Welcome back Victoria. I think alot of us have had times where we have gone off the tracks a bit so glad to hear you are back on it. I love the gym and want to join one again, if I can afford it in the new year. Good luck with your induction, most gyms do classes which you might find more enjoyable than just going and doing your own thing on the equiptment?

Hi Victoria,

If you want to get your blood glucose levels lower quickly then cut back on the starchy carbohydrate - i.e. cereals, bread, potatoes, pasta and rice etc.

In my experience, diet is far more powerful than exercise and weight loss in lowering blood glucose levels..

Best wishes - John

Dear Victoria,

Welcome to this forum, I see you have already had some good advice. It is good that you are considering exercise because it is really good for us. However, Whally is correct, I too have found that the most potent way in reducing blood sugar is to cut back on carbs. If you don't put glucose (ie carbohydrate) into your body, how can you have high blood sugar?

Warmest Regards Dodger

Hi Victoria,

Are you testing ? Self monitoring of blood glucose is the best way to establish and maintain good control. Your medics want to macromanage your condition via the HbA1c on large time scale, you need to micromanage the condition on a day-by-day, if not mouthful-by-mouthful, basis.

One of the best pieces of advice for T2s to help put them in control is ...

another major contributor to the online diabetic community is the Aussie called Alan S. Read his "test, Review, Adjust" advice here ...

if you need a book to read kick off with Gretchen Becker, "Type 2 Diabetes : the First Year".

BTW you shouldn't really be put off Metformin, it trully is a great med and it has heart protective and other positives as well.

the book peter has suggested is truly brilliant i could not put it down , so id second peter its a must.

Id say many of us have encountered alot of probs with metformin as well as positives theres negatives as well.
