I put a thread on here a while ago stating that a new consultant had said that as well as being diabetic, I'm now epileptic too.
Despite all my tests (MRI scan, eeg etc) coming back clear, he still insisted on Monday that I'm epileptic. He states that it must be due to a chemical inbalance in my brain but there are no tests to confirm this is the case. There's also no test to confirm if I will have more seizures (I've only had 2 in 2 years), what caused it and why now.
I still think it's related to my pump (they've only occurred since I got it) but because he's a neurologist he can only go off standards (my sugar was 7 when tested by hubby - not low I know but low for me!). The diabetic consultant wasn't interested because he's not a neurologist (don't even get me started on my last appointment with him!!).
The neurologist thinks I'm not coping well and am depressed (talk about stating the bleeding obvious!!). He also suggested seeing a psychologist but as I pointed out, I have no licence now and it takes me 1.5 hours to get back to work which I have to make up (including the appointment time and the over-run coz they're never on time).
Told him I don't think anyone up here cares about my health and that I'm not listened to.
I'm also sick of being the 'strong' one and trying to hold everything together. I want someone to take care of me for a change - but doesn't look like that will ever happen.
Oh well, hopefully, I win tonight's euromillions and I can hire someone to take care of me!!
Sorry, rant over!! But thanks for listening. 🙄

Oh Suzie what a bummer. Do ask for a second opinion.
((((((((((((((hugs by the million)))))))))))))

I agree on requesting a second opinion, sounds very confusing. I hope you can find some decent and deserving support for your low mood too. Best of luck 🙂

Big hugs Suzie {{{{{Suzie}}}}}

SOunds like you are having a horribe time. It is a shame consultants from different disciplines can't get together and treat as whole people rather than we have to go from one ivory towered consultantto another.

I hope things improve and you get treatment to help you get and feel better.

I am sorry to hear of your epilepsy diagnosis suziepoo. I have had epilepsy for 23 yrs now and have been controlled for the last 2.
As you have only had 2seizures, it is very hopeful that you wont have any further episodes if you are on medication...have they started u medications? It can take a while to find the right drug and the right dose, but there are many meds available that give good control.

If u want to chat feel free to pm me...i was so upset when i was diagnosed, and it took me years to get my head around it. People with epilepsy are thought to suffer slightly more with depression, so dont be too disheartened...things will improve hun xxx.

Hi Doddy
I'm not on any meds at the moment. The consultant agreed that he wouldn't go on any meds in my position. As I've only had 2, a year apart, taking meds would mean I wasn't sure if it was the meds stopping me having them or I just wasn't having them. (I'm even unkeen at taking tablets for a headache!!).
Diabetics are prone to depression too, so looks like we've got a double-dose!!
However, I am going to ask my GP to send me for a second opinion. (I didn't need one for diabetes coz my sugar levels confirmed I was !!)
But thanks for all your positive thoughts!! x

Im pretty sure that they will diagnose epilepsy if u have had more than one event. I think it is wise move not to start meds yet...they dont have the nicest of side effects, and like u say, if they are a year apart, here is a good chance they are "isolated" instances.
Depression is, i think, a possibility with any given diagnosis..its a lot to get your head round, and does have an impact on your life, no matter how small.
My fingers are crossed for u that you dont have any more events, and the epilepsy does not become a regular pain in the butt!

Hugs to you xxx

So sorry you are going through this and as has already been said it is very frustrating that consultants can't seem to see anything other than their speciality. You are a whole person and need to be treated like one. Hope you soon get a second opinion and that this person really puts you and your needs first.

I have come across two cases of ?fitting? in diabetics that to all intents and purposes resembled epilepsy. The first was when I was in hospital as a teenager. A youngster (probably should have been in a children?s ward) across from me told the nurse he was going hypo. This was before BG meters and she did not believe him as his last urine test was positive. He started fitting a short while later and the curtains were put around him. A few hours later he was a right as reign. I suspect his liver kicked in. The second case was also brought by a low BG as a result of drinking. This stopped the liver kicking in and unfortunately the person (he was about 30 at the time) became epileptic as a result. It may be worth discussing with a consultant in case it was a one (well two) off as a result of going onto a pump.

I have sent a link to Suzie, regarding another person on a pump who has had two fits. His have shown low magnesium levels, blood sugars were not hypo range when he had the seconed fit.

I've written to my GP and requested a second opinion from a neurologist. I've also requested a test for magnesium deficiency (Thanks Pumper Sue!!). From what I've read, I've had several symptoms that can be linked to it and have a very restricted diet - I'm not at all keen on anything green n leafy!!

Copepod - I am in Scotland!! So thanks for the link.

Fingers crossed, I'll have better news before Christmas!!
xx

Just had a call from my GP. Sadly, my magnesium levels are fine - so my seizures weren't due to that.
He has asked me to go and discuss how I want to progress things now. (Especially after the letter from the neurologist - probably saying I refused to go back!!)

Oh well, at least the tests that I had showed that my heart's fine! Wonder what will fall apart next instead???🙄

Sorry you're no closer to a solution Suzie :( Good news about the heart at least! 🙂

Hi Sue,
sorry to hear you are no further foreword. At least your GP is open to suggestions. So go along and have a chat with him and see what else he can come up with.
Thinking of you.

Sue
