If there?s one thing I?m *really proud Labour *introduced, it?s NHS *Direct.

Our then Health Secretary Frank Dobson identified the need to offer telephone advice and support to the public 24 hours a day. And since *launching in 1998, it has dealt with five million calls a year.

All my family has used it, *including me. In the early hours of Christmas Day 2006, I woke in massive pain. I rang and the qualified nurses correctly diagnosed kidney stones.

Not only does the helpline offer peace of mind it also means NHS resources are used more efficiently, reducing doctor call-outs and *waiting times in accident and emergency.

It saves the NHS ?200million a year and over the Christmas period prevented 5,000 people needlessly going to A&E.

Used it a few times when kids have been poorly, always helpful and very profesional.
