Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi , I am new to the board. I was diagnosed type 2 in October and put on metformin and statins for cholesterol . I swim 40 lengths 5 times a week , my weight is fine so I hope life will sort itself out again soon. It is a bit scary hearing about all the side effects ! I have some lack of feeling in my toes , does it worsen when the diabetes gets under control or will they remain like this ... Or get any better ?
Thanks for any advice ( I am 66 by the way !)

Hi Ann and a warm welcome to the forum i have neuropathy in my feet at present but i think the better your control gets the less of a pain it becomes x

Hi Ann. Welcome 🙂

Not sure about the neuropathy. I think as Steff says, it can improve with control.

Hi Ann, welcome to the forum 🙂 It sounds like you are well placed to manage your diabetes well. Regular exercise, such as your (impressive!) swimming schedule is immensely beneficial to good control. Try not to be too concerned about the possible complications of diabetes - the monitoring we receive and the treatments available are far in advance of what was available in the past. You have already shown your commitment to good control by seeking out help from a forum such as ours, so you are in an excellent position to stay fit and healthy.

There is a side-effect of diabetes called neuropathy, which often affects the feet and can manifest itself as either loss of sensation or sharp pains. This is often transient in nature and canimprove as your levels improve, so hopefully this will be the case with you!

Take a little while to look throught the Useful Links thread - the book by Gretchen Becker is particularly recommended. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have! 🙂

Hi Ann and welcome to the forum. 40 lengths 5 times a week wow I wish

Thank you 'northerner' I lived in Manchester until 4 years ago when I moved to London and married my second husband . Your advice and encouragement is greatly appreciated , it's a bit of a shock when first diagnosed isn't it ?!
Thank you Alison too , what a warm welcome 🙂

Hi Ann

Welcome to the forum. Before I was diagnosed I use to get a pain in one of my heels especially first thing on a morning. Once my levels were in a better place it went so hopefully the same will happen to you.

Wish I could swim 40 lenghts..............be lucky to be able to do breaths. On of my big regrets was not learning to do the breaststroke.

welcome Ann..understand totally that being dx is a shock to the system but you've found a great place here ...and remember no question is regarded silly x🙂

Hi Anne

Welcome to the forum. You sound as if you mean business swimming such a lot, I really admire that. I live in Norway and was diagnosed 1.5 months ago. Came as a complete shock as I wasn't having any symptoms and thought I was eating well and sensibly. You glean so much information here and no question is ever ridiculed. Look forward to hearing more about you.

Donna 🙂

p.s. sorry about getting your name wrong. Most of my friends are Ann with an e force of habit!

Hello Ann. Welcome to the forum from me too.

I've got a touch of neuropathy, especially in the right foot. My problem also seems to be related with poor circulation to that foot too (might be due to an older problem caused when I sprained the ankle very badly several years ago).

It does seem to get worse when I'm not so good diet-wise, but on the whole it doesn't cause me any problems. Hopefully, with good control the same will be true for you too. But that's something that could happen naturally because of all that excellent exercise that you're doing!

Andy 🙂

hi Ann.... welcome to the forum. I'm new too.. but the people here are lovely and supportive. I have a touch of neuropathy in my toes and fingers but I'm hoping that when I get my BG under control all will be well.... so hope that will happen for you too 🙂

Hell and welcome to the forum Ann🙂

Hi Ann, from a fellow "newbie".
I think your exercise regime is possibly causing your problems, I mean it ain't natural. Try resting with choccy cakes and plenty of wine: it might not make the numbness go away, but I'll doubt you'll care😉
Seriously though, it looks as if you'll get plenty of support and helpful suggestions from this site. I too have experienced symptoms of neuropathy when control has strayed.
Humour is the ultimate panacea🙂
