A grandmother died from a rare infection caused by being licked on the hand - by her pet dog, an inquest heard.
Sheena Kavanagh, 53, went into septic shock after dog saliva entered her bloodstream through a small cut on her hand.
A coroner heard an affectionate lick from one of her Yorkshire terriers or Jack Russells proved fatal because her spleen had been surgically removed in 1988.
Because she did not have the organ which prevents bacterial infection she was taken ill after finishing work at a care home where she was a chef on April 24.
The mum-of-two was rushed to Stafford Hospital's A&E where medics suspected she had bacterial meningitis but the results were not clear.
She was prescribed antibiotics but her condition deteri1orated and she died at 9.42pm the following night after her organs shut down.
