Want to try animal insulin in my pump, but consultant says not suitable for various reasons. Anybody out there that has tried and succeeded?

good lord penny why on earth would you want to try that?!!!

when I was diagnosed back in late 80's they were still using that but moved me onto synthetic not long after thankfully.

Hi Penny, one of our members is on animal insulin in a pump and gets on fine with it 🙂 Hopefully she will be along to help! What reasons has your consultant given?

I am not on a pump but when I was diagnosed I was on animal insulin and hated the thought of it... out of interest, why do you want to change? xx

Hi Penny,
I use animal insulin in a pump and have done so for the last 5 years.
Please do ask your consultant for the reasons it's not suitable 😡
I've been using animal insulin for the last 48 years with no problems at all.(Complication free)

Animal insulin in pump

Thanks for all your replies. A few years after being diagnosed with Type 1, was also diagnosed with ME. Despite my best efforts, no improvement in condition forthcoming. Whenever I feel desperate, I wonder if some of my symptoms are down to synthetic insulin and whatever it contains, eg large quantities of preservatives.

Good luck with your attemts to sort. I used to be on animal insulin with no probs. Now on pump with plastic insulin no probs. Keep at it ! 🙂

Hi Sue, I'm very insulin sensitive and so carb count. I don't know how I would get it right half an hour before I eat. How do you manage? I will check with my consultant about why he thinks its unsuitable - I think he spoke about degradation causing infusion problems and complications with slower action of animal insulin.

Well that is the only complication, as far as I know - you have to be aware it has a much slower onset!

Sue's had her pump (well this is not her first one) for absolutely ages and I'm sure if she had probs with it degrading or bunging up or whatever - then she'd say straight away that it WAS a snag.

Hi Penny,
your consultant is refering to 40 + year old research. What he is saying is the insulin precipitates in the tubing and causes a blockage. This is not the case. Insulin's have improved over the years there is also a posphate buffer in them to stop this happening.
Bolusing 30 mins before the meal is not a problem as I decide how many carbs I am going to eat at that meal time and bolus for it. Then work the numbers around what is on offer 🙂
Apidra is famous for clogging the tubing as is actrapid. Actrapid even has a warning on it..... not to be used in insulin pumps.

As to the slower action, thats quite simple to work around all you do is change your basal pattern 2 hours before a change is needed, instead of an hour with synthetic insulin.

Bottom line normally is the consultant has no idea and has no intention of finding out about animal insulin. 😡
