Two Sacramento County parents who grew accustomed to testing their son's sugar levels every two hours since his birth are getting some help from a four-legged friend.

With assistance from the community and fundraisers, the family was able to purchase a puppy with a special skill set that could save their diabetic son's life.

Thanks to the generosity of many of our KCRA 3 viewers, the alert dog came home Saturday night, ahead of schedule -- and a 7-year-old diabetic boy, who also has Down syndrome, couldn't be happier.

The boy and his puppy made an instant connection. Nicholas Keim was beyond excited to pick up the golden doodle from Redding.

"Oh, I'm so over the moon and so excited and thankful," said Krista Keim, Nicholas' mother.
