I have now been taking readings for six months and have reached the conclusion that what is putting me into the diabetic range is my first thing in the morning reading.
Before breakfast, no matter what I do or what I eat the day before I cannot achieve a reading below six point five ( I am usually just under seven)
That does not change two hours after eating and by dinner time I am usually under five point five and under seven point five two hours later unless I have "fallen off the wagon".
By bed time I am back to under six point five but then suffer from "the dawn dump" the next morning.
What if anything can I do to reduce that pesky first thing in the morning reading other than going on to medication which isn't going to happen

Eat something - like a small piece of cheese when you get up ?

Ok I understand that would trigger my pancreas to produce insulin but it still means that my levels are too high for several hours before It does so as presumably the "dawn dump" occurs well, at dawn.
Is there any way of stopping this happening other than getting up at "sparrow's whatever" to eat a piece of cheese.
Let's put it this way, there is only one 10.00 and it doesn't have am after it.
I am determined not to let this thing beat me.

You could try a handful of nuts right before bedtime...I used to have a small KitKat before bed when my waking numbers were higher...however I'm not advocating that...it worked for me but may not work for everyone...iIwould try the nuts or a piece of cheese...if it works then it is liver dump...good luck.

Uusally it starts around 2-3am when your body is preparing for you to rise/wake up...pumping out some energy for you to start the day with.

Dawn Phenomenon is a result of Liver activity dumping carb into your blood stream until you eat, so having eaten something, and giving it something fatty to process will slow the dump down - not eating extends it.

Just leave a [ suitable ] snack of your choice by alarm clock.

My body must know by now I’m not preparing to get up for a very long time after 3am! :D I think my DP starts much later and the later I rise, the higher the figure. An oatcake or something before bed can help.

Thanks folks,
I'm usually still up at 2.00am and I have noticed if I do eat anything i shouldn't just before bed my next morning figure is lower than I would expect it to be.
Do you trying think a couple of pear drops before retiring would be too optimistic?

I'd be tempted to try something a bit slower acting like an oatcake and cheese or similar.

Ah well a forlorn hope, always the optimist, I love pear drops and miss them more than most things.

I wouldn’t bother trying to stop it. Your BGs are all in normal range. Don’t get obsessed by it. I would kill for regular readings like that.🙂

Keep up the good work, well done.🙂

Its always worth a go JM...since you are testing you'll know if/when it works...good luck...I'll be interested to hear how it goes...but like @khskel I wouldn't recommend the pear drops🙂

Yeh!
12 midnight reading 7.6 ( by yes I did eat a few Doritos I shouldn't have) followed by two pear drop and 10.00 am reading next morning 6.1.
Ok so maybe not pear drops every night but perhaps a very small piece of cake or a biscuit instead.
I can feel a small level of sanity returning to my life

A couple of thin cheese crackers often did the trick for me...right before bedtime.

Thanks everybody on this thread! 🙂 I find it very topical to me at the moment!

As my BS is in target ranges, after a year of being high out from a hospital stay, my going to bed figures are lower! Sometimes I snack & sometimes I dont, resulting in a lower waking BS but, other times, like this morning, in a high waking BS!

I think, from previous nights & days recently, that my threshold for bedtime BS that don’t require a snack is 5.8: lower than that; I need a snack!

Of course, it’s always a theory until I try it out but, that’s what I’ll do if my bedtime reading is lower than the threshold next time!

My 1st ex-wife who is T1 has a Mars Bar everynight before she goes to bed I am reliably informed by my Son.

I'm not sure I'd do that Vince...but if it works for her...why not?

It's 1.30 am so cake here I come!
