Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone, I posted a few weeks ago to say that I was due to go into hospital for a hysterectomy, but because my blood sugar was so high, I did not go in! However, I was sent to the specialist diabetic nurse, who said I would have to go on insulin! and I must say I was not keen after being told by my doctor that I would definately put weight on with it!
at the moment I am on (Metformin SR and Victoza 1.2)
She did tell me one thing that has made a massive difference to my sugar levels. I told her that I had no appetite at all in the first half of the day, and did not eat. She said this had to stop because by not eating my liver was pumping out glucose into my body to give me energy, and also because there was so much it would pass through my kidney and eventually cause damage. This was also the reason why I was getting lots of bladder infections!
I asked her if she would give me a couple of weeks, soI could try to sort it out myself before agreeing to go on insulin and she said yes!
Well, I did it. I made sure I have something to eat at least 3 times a day, even if only a small amount. Porridge, a couple of breakfast biscuits, and even a couple of sausages without the bread.
My readings are now all btween 6's and 7's
My consultant has phoned me and penciled my op in now for the 26th March, if they stay the same! I am really pleased with myself.
The other query is, does anyone get really really tired? I don't mean normal tiredness, but a kind of unatural tiredness. I would say I get it on average about twice a month. It comes over me all of a sudden, and I have to lie down and go to sleep. Las time I slept from 1 in the afternoon until 10.30 that night? I don't feel ill, I just feel like I could sleep forever! My sugars are ok when this happens too?
Does anyone else get this?

It's very wrong of your doctor to suggest that you will inevitably put weight on if you use insulin, this is absolutely not the case and many thousands of people are able to use insulin to successfully control their levels and not gain weight - as with everything, if you eat a good, balanced and in particular a 'diabetes-friendly' diet, such as low GI/GL, and maintain a good level of regular exercise then you should not gain weight. I think the danger can be that some people may think they can eat what they want as long as the insulin is there to control things, but the key is still moderation and knowing what combinations work well for you. Also, I suspect that when doctors use such scare tactics to 'threaten' people with insulin, this makes people feel even more out of control if they find they cannot control their levels without it. :(

But, it is good to hear that you are managing to control your levels much better now 🙂 I do hope your operation goes ahead as planned and you can look forward to much better health and energy levels soon 🙂 If your blood sugar levels are fine when you feel so tired then it is possible that it could be unrelated to your diabetes, so do ask your doctor about it.

I'm fighting tiredness every single day and its got me so down recently. I go to work and by about 3pm am so tired I might as well not be there for the amount of work I get done between 3 & 5pm. I come home and sit down and within minutes I can fall asleep. Usually someone wakes me and I have dinner and inevitably fall asleep after dinner too......I've missed so much of the soaps lately.....lol :D I'm going to go ack to the doctors and ask them to investigate the tiredness. I am meant to be controlling my diabetes through diet and exercise but whilst I have this tiredness I don't have any energy to be able to exercise. 🙂

When they put me on insulin they said the same thing. But I've actually lost weight instead of gaining it, in fact, my weight loss has been slow but steady ever since.

I think it is a myth that people will gain weight when on insulin, I have been on insulin 18 years and am told that I am slim (we would all love to lose a few pounds I'm sure) even without being able to exercise much in recent years due to several hip operations... I have remained the same weight for about 6 years within a kilo so it's definitely not true! As Northerner says, as long as you maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle there is no reason to gain weight any more than anyone else would!

Great that your levels are under control though so well done 🙂

xx

Thanks for the replies everyone. I certainly won't be as worried if I eventually have to go on insulin.
Does anyone get any nausia on insulin?
I have it all the time with the 2 meds I am on. I have to inject my victoza two times instead of the once because I can't tolerate the 1.2 dose. So I have to do 2 at 0.6
I am going to go and see my doc about this, as at least a couple of times a week I am actually sick, and because I am on Metformin SR. I am bringing that back too. So maybe I would be better on the normal Metformin, so it is absorbed quicker?

Have you ever tried Byetta? Some people tolerate it better than Victoza, and vice-versa.

I've never suffered nausea due to insulin, although I do feel a bit nauseous if my BG levels are too high. There should be nothing about insulin to make you nauseous as it's essentially no different to what your body produces naturally 🙂

Ginger or peppermint is sposed to help the nausea bit apparently - that would be ginger tea in the case of a T2 as opposed to ginger nuts! LOL
