Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello, I'm new to this but not new to diabetes. I was diagnosed type 1 in 1979 and of course think I know everything about it, but I don't and hope to learn quite a lot from you.

Welcome to the forum @republic .
Pleased that you have found the forum and we look forward to hearing more from you.

If you are happy to do so, it will help us in answering any questions to know how you manage your diabetes. Which insulin(s) you are using, injections or pump, any access to a sensor?

Hello and welcome @republic glad you've joined us 🙂

I hope the past 40+ years of T1 have been kind to you, there's certainly been some tech advances

Welcome def not old though as I was diagnosed in 1965 and still learning 🙂

I'm on Lantus and Humalog and began using a Libre 2 senser a month. It's wonderful not having to prick my finger many times a day. I don't understand why I wasn't prescribed one earlier. It's made my life a lot easier. Could I ask how regularly do you see the diabetic nurse/doctor?

As I use a pump it's a yearly visit for me except pump renewal year when it's twice so I can pick up my new pump. Otherwise I keep well away from the system.

My involvement with the diabetic team ( Scotland), consists of one telephone consultation with the consultant. Two weeks later I have my bloods, feet, weight, blood pressure and urine, checked at the clinic. This is yearly. Every two years I have my eyes checked. I have telephone access to the clinic Monday to Friday. So far this has been sufficient. And hello.

I am only 4.5 years diagnosed, so my consultant likes to touch base with me every 6 months but this has been via the telephone since Covid and has become nearer 10 months than 6..... I could elect to have a face to face appointment now, but it would be a waste of time and fuel travelling. I would be quite happy with yearly now that I have Libre or even managing it without appointments, provided that I could self refer back to the clinic if I needed anything. I like my consultant and he is good but I learn more from this forum on how to manage my diabetes well. There isn't a lot you can learn even from an expert in a 10 min telephone appointment.... but there are a whole team of practical experts here on the forum living with the same challenges as me, that I can learn from every day.... and the checks and balances of a public forum to ensure that the advice is reasonable and accurate and safe.

Hello, how old as a diabetic is that? We earn as we learn & that can be a long time.

What do you want to know. What isulin are you using now? (Do you pump?) I might even pick up some tricks on this topic.

Welcome to the forum @republic

Glad you have found us 🙂

I’m not sure I’ll ever stop learning and relearning about my diabetes management - partly because it keeps changing the rules all the time, and tried and tested strategies and approaches have to be re-tweaked and adjusted as time goes on.

Have you ever done one of the intensive courses like DAFNE or BERTIE?

I get some stuff checked at my GP surgery (weight, BP, toe tickle), and some input from pump clinic at the hospital. I try to make those 6 months apart, but the appointments do have a habit of drifting closer together from year to year.

I get the eye screening annually too.

Welcome @republic

The key to knowledge is knowing you know nothing. Wanting to learn is also the first step. I'm guessing you'll get all the info you need on here. Definitely.
