An awful morning

Does anyone remember in the good/bad old days when we used syringes we were taught to pull back the plunger to check for blood in case we'd hit a major vein or blood vessel? of course we can't do that now with our pens and I think I ran into major problems this morning due to that.

I injected everything as normal and am absolutely convinced I didn't inject my short acting instead of long acting but within 20 minutes I was hypo, I didn't think much of it - treated it and had breakfast tested again 5.3 - thought "Ok it's going up again" rested for a few minutes, felt funny, tested 2.2 and on it went for 3 hours! I was really getting scared and totally exhausted now. Began to think I was going to need outside help at that rate. I text my dad and asked him to come round before Paul went to work so I wasn't on my own - I felt so drained and horrible.

By lunchtime it had finally crept up and registered at 20 😱 but it was almost a relief! I had a very conservative dose of humalog and a sandwich and it's now hovering around 11, I'm not going to try and get it down too much until my body has recovered properly.

When I injected the levemir it bled a fair bit and I got a funny taste in my mouth - a metallic insulin taste - so I reckon it shot round my body really quick and caused an almighty drop - it's all I can put it down to. It happened to me once before - about 8 years or more ago. Very very scarey.:(

Karen that sounds absolutely awful. You poor thing. Please rest for the rest of the day. I'm glad your dad was able to come round it must have been really scary. lots of hugs Amanda xx

Karen so sorry to hear about your awful morning hun xxHugsxx so pleased your dad was about to care for you.take care

Thanks Amanda and Steff. If I hadn't have felt so awful I'd have thought my meter was having a fit. I used so many strips today - doc won't like me! Yes I'm glad dad was able to come, mum wanted me to go there but I just couldn't - I could barely get downstairs! I'm going to do nothing for the rest of the day - even my hair shall remain unstraightened!

How horrible Karen :( I hope that you are fully recovered soon. I've had a couple of occasions where my lantus has given me quite severe hypos and they do seem much harder to treat.

Thanks Alan, I am incredibly tired now - it must knock hell out of our bodies when this happens. Paul finishes at 6pm so I shall go and sit quietly and watch something mind numbing on the tele! My neighbour is back home now so I don't feel quite so lonely, I sent dad home about 4pm, bless him.

I've had the odd occasion on the old meds when I just couldn't get my BGs to stay above 4, no matter what I tried so I know how scary and exhausting it can be. You're right to take it easy for the rest of the day. Pamper yourself and have an early night. Hugs.

It is nasty when that happens.

In the days when I used to sit up late at night (sometimes until about 4am 😱) playing computer games (It was at least 15 years ago but I should have known better) and then go to work the next day, after 2 or 3 days without catching up on sleep I'd be zombie like. I'd also find that my BG would struggle to stay above the low 4s no matter what I ate.

As if the brain decided that any carbs eaten would not be sent to the bloodstream because it was sleepy time and the muscles would have to just stop working and lay down.

This has happened a few times since after enforced sleep deprivation so I'm sure there is a correlation between tiredness/exhaustion and never ending hypos.

I once mentioned it to a consultant but he had never heard of it and dismissed the idea.

Flutterby, I had something like this once.

Our dinner was ready, I injected (short acting) and ended up lying on the floor with my husband feeding me glucose before I could start eating. We thought that perhaps I had got close to a blood vessel or something.

Hope you are feeling better now - and gettting pampered by someone 😉

Oh phew karen - sounds very much like you injected into a vein to me too. Have only done that once in 40 years so hopefully that will be your 'one'.

Can you entirely avoid that area for 'quite a while' ?

Thanks to you all, I was really nervous injecting this morning!!

Jenny - yes I'm going to avoid that area - thinking I should have a circle tattoo'd there to mark the spot!!

MCH - that's what happened to me years ago we were staying with my uncle and he'd opened a special bottle of wine for me to try. I injected, sat down to eat, felt really odd and checked my sugar to find it was 1!! Needless to say I had lucozade and no wine!

Rob - I get annoyed when consultants, GP's etc give you that look and say "nope - couldn't be happening, never heard of it, next please" so unfair when we are living with it and know what is happening to us.

Alison thank you - knowing that you found it scary and exhausting too made me kinder to myself yesterday evening.

My levels have been high so far today and I'm really hungry so off to sort out some lunch now. I deliberately let it run high last night so will knock it into shape during today. Thanks again to you all.
