I read a leaflet this morning explaining how high fibre carbs work, they lower your blood sugar over a prolonged time. Is this why beans & pulses etc are ok to eat even though they're high in carbs? Am I right or have I mis-understood? I've been worried about eating my stews which have a lot of pulses in them, I'm hoping that I'll be able to enjoy this & not put my sugar through the roof:confused:

Items like pulses and beans etc are slow to digest, so low GI, which is good for diabetics as they have a small effect on BG levels.....🙂

Pulses and beans are very good for you as they take a long time to digest and will therefore only raise your blood sugar by a small amount, if at all, so carry on enjoying them! 🙂 As a Type 1 I was told that I do not need to inject extra insulin to account for them. The only thing you do need to be careful of really is the sauces that accompany them as these may be carby.

Thank you both soo much, I am now a very happy bunny, I've found something I love & guilt free!!! :D

Is that why is always hypo with beans on toast?

makes sense 🙂 x

With beans on toast you have to be careful about the sugar content of the sauce, so I usually bolus for the 'of which, sugars' shown on the tin 🙂

I take it the same doesn't apply for tins of spaghetti on toast! 😛

:D Have spent the last *odd years trying to convince OH spagetti hoops are not a vegetable (as in 'what veg do you want with your shepherds pie?' ; 'spagetti hoops'!)

Just to add that old mantra 'your diabetes may vary' - K eats a lot of beans, pulses, sweetcorn etc and we find we do need to count them in the insulin calculation - they are digested slowly so she can inject after the meal but we do count them. So like everything else seams to be - 'test, test, test'🙂

But IMO it's very good for (most people) to eat beans etc - Aparently the average person doesn't have enough fibre in their diet.

One of my favourite examples is from India. Back in the seventies the diet suggested by the diabetes 'authorities' (mostly based in the US and UK was lower carb, higher fat.
This diet didn't work well with people in Madras where the diet was almost vegan. People didn't comply because the diet, as suggested at the time, couldn't possibly fit in with diets eaten by the rest of the family and friends.
M Viswanathan, and his team devised a very high carb but also very high fibre diet , It included lots of chickpeas/gram dahl. His patients were able to comply with the diet and had better control.
