Hi 😱 i might be tooo old to be on a forum - and i dont have D i am simply a carer (?simply?!) to my husband who has had type 1 for about 43 years. He is now 84. Em, i happen to be just over 20 years younger though i guess thats not significant. I dont believe any of us are Experts but we simply manage it all best we can. Joined today - mostly curiosity but also hoping for mutual two way support. Does that make sense? Anyway, hello.

Hi Tiddlywinks and welcome to the forum, firstly they is no age limit on this forum I think theres some in there 70's 60's etc etc that post on here so your more then welcome we dont discrimanate against age here lol.You are in the right place for support you will get an abundance of that here so welcome onboard x

Hi tiddlywinks, welcome to the forum 🙂 Makes perfect sense, and thank you for the introduction! Although we have a Carers section, it doesn't seem to get used much, as everyone tends to just join in with everyone else on the General Message board.

We have people of all ages and types so you are bound to find someone to share experiences with - although age doesn't really matter at all. Goodness, your husband must have seen a lot of changes during his lifetime, particularly in diabetes care! We have several other people who have had Type 1 for decades.

I hope you enjoy reading and participating in the forums. If you want to ask anything, please go right ahead! 🙂

Hello and welcome to the forum.🙂

I am a carer for my 12 year old son who is type 1 and wears an insulin pump. So I do understand how difficult it can be caring for someone in this situation. Does your husband suffer with many hypo's? I hate to see my son having a hypo - especially if he is really low and not making any sense - it makes me feel so sad to see him like this.🙂Bev

thank you ...

for your responses ... very reassuring! In direct reply - yep, plenty of hypo and DKA experience too! After all these years i still find it gets pretty scary but find adrenaline (mine!) kicks in and i cope with the extremes OK. Having said that i want to point out the optimistic side - one can live well to a ripe old age despite complications of diabetes. Until 6 years ago (and another health problem) my husband was still playing golf and going swimming.
Yep, seen loads of improvements. But some retrograde steps too, well in particular newly diagnosed 1 and 2s (in my part of the world anyway )- dont seem to get structures support and info on nutrition. I still count carbos - but it seems to be unfashionable now????
THANKS again for welcome and reassurance, i promise to wear my teeth and smoothe the wrinkes on my face away before coming on line to join you ok?
(ha .... am i joking ...or am i not??!)

Bev

Oh dear, it never seems Right for children and young folk to have to put up with this complication in their lives. i have no experience of that but can imagine your concerns.x
i am now going to browse the site but hoping i find my way back here in due course!
