Only diagnosed with type 2 three weeks ago, on meds plus of course diet and exercise. My GP said I had to inform the DVLA and I have read a little about this subject,. But frankly the possiblility of having my licence taken away or even the threat of it absolutely terrifies me because although I dont drive for a living or anything of that nature, I would be devastated not being able to drive as it has meant independance and freedom to me all my life. I am already reasonably controlling my condition and have never had a hypo even when feeling my worst before diagnosis. This fear has made me not want to tell them at all and indeed I have not yet done so because as I say, I would be mortified to lose my right to drive. I have though told my insurance company and they had no problem with it. Could you please advise? NO DRAMAS PLEASE just hoping for some solid comfort!

Yes, you do have to tell them else you are breaking the law. I wouldn't be worried, it's very unlikely you'd lose your licence, especially as you're unlikely to have had any disabling hypos as a type II, and I'm assuming you don't have any other health problems due to your diabetes.

Think of it this way - if you had serious eye problems due to your diabetes, or disabling hypos, and you killed someone whilst driving, how would that feel? Besides, even if you did lose your licence, you're in London where most people don't need a car due to the excellent public transport system. You could always get a bicycle too, that would probably be a good idea anyway from the health benefits point of view.

Oops, thanks for the correction. Looks like I'm mistaken then on the need to tell them. Sorry!

Your insurance will not be valid if you have not disclosed a medical condition to the DVLA

Just be careful what you say on here you never know who is reading, just a little tip thats all x hope you get things sorted

If not on insulin, or a selection of pills that help your own insulin along you dont need to say anything, but you should just to cover all angles.......

you wont lose your license..............:D

If your GP has told you to contact the DVLA then do so - if in doubt tell them. If you tell them and it wasn't necessary then they will write and tell you that you can keep your license.

If you don't tell them and should do and they find out you could lose your license and invalidate your insurance.

thanks

Many thanks for your reply. No I don't have any complications, but as I am about to have my first full blood check etc. that could change, but judging from symptoms etc. I dont think there are any big worries. However, I am a person who although I appreciate all the transport facilities available, I would be lost nonetheless if the choice to drive somewhere was taken from me. As to becoming a cyclist, I am afraid this is just NOT me. I have no shame at all in saying that I find cycling a scary and uncomfortable idea. Hats off to those who do it, but it just isnt me. I will however investigate the procedure for telling the DVLA and do what is best. Many thanks again

thanks - a reprieve!

I think the best thing to do here is refer to the Diabetes UK help page and call there care line if you are still not sure

http://www.diabetes.org.uk/Guide-to-diabetes/Living_with_diabetes/Driving/Informing_the_DVLA/

Possibly you don't need to tell them yet if you are only on metformin and not having hypo's.

Thank you very much for that Mark T. I have read the page from your link carefully and see that at the moment I do not need to inform them. That is a relief!

wow even more thanks

Here is the DVLA / government webpage relating to diabetes on tablets (I'm assuming that covers your meds?) http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/MedicalRulesForDrivers/MedicalA-Z/DG_185426

It states "If you hold a car or motorcycle driving licence - you will not need to tell DVLA about your medical condition."

Rules are different for driving HGVs, PSVs, minibuses etc.

Evn better news - thanks to you Copepod! I am a petite only slightly overweight female (honest) but far from normal, thank goodness!

You're very welcome, Lovetosing - always best to go for the official version of advice.

I'm only normal in terms of weight 🙂
