Relationship to Diabetes

Hi, I dunno what to say....it's been six months (more or less to day) since I found out for sure that I'm diabetic. Although I'm losing weight, cutting down on carbs, sugar, etc, I'm still always tired.

I'm not sure how I can manage things better than I am, but, I guess I'm not doing all I c/should be? Given that I'm permanently shattered? I'm not very mobile, so exercise is quite difficult, apart from lack of activity, I can't think of a better way to manage the diabetes...diet n exercise are keys, right? Is there anything else I've overlooked?

Sorry, but I'm getting downbeat. I'm very overweight, I guess that's another reason for tiredness, I just got a check up at Docs....my blood pressure keeps fluctuating. Nothing that I'm managing or not, on diabetes itself. Thanks for read, it just seems like vicious circle....I'm tired, so I just sleep. I don't wanna keep on making myself worse, but yup....floundering.....cheers!

Hi J-J, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear you are feeling so worn out, it can be so relentless sometimes :( Are you testing your blood glucose levels to see how your food choices are affecting you? Sometimes, food can 'spike' levels up after eating, and then they fall again quite rapidly - this can make you feel very tired, plus the fluctuations in your levels can impact on your mood, making it difficult to motivate yourself and adding to the feelings of lethargy. If you can manage to smooth out these fluctuations then it can help. Has the doctor offered any advice, on how to lose weight, or how you might be able to exercise given your mobility issues?

I can only lose weight when eating low carb - and sticking to low carb foods, rather than small amounts of high carb ones - which means eating a lot of nutrients, vitamins and minerals along with them. I think that might help with the energy levels though you could try taking a supplement just in case something is low and needs topping up.
The foods which stopped me losing weight in the past are exactly those which spike my blood glucose, so I am eating more or less the same diet as I was back in the last century, at about 50 gm of carbs a day and lots of salads, even though it is cold now.
I have dropped about 40lb in the last year, without trying, just by watching my blood glucose levels and keeping them normal.

Could be so many reasons for persistent tiredness JJ. High glucose levels are the most obvious but make sure you’re sleeping properly because sleep apnoea can cause daytime sleepiness. Have a thorough medical check up looking at your thyroid levels, Vit D & C levels, possible anaemia etc. Being inactive leads to more inactivity and tiredness so do as much as you can and don’t choose foods that make you sluggish. Even being a bit fed up can lead to daytime lethargy so maybe time for a bit of an overhaul. Good luck 🙂

Thanks everyone, hello!

I have been for all my check ups n well, I have some work to do, but, the numbers are starting to go down, move in the right to direction, as am I😉 Yes, still tired, but sooo encouraged n determined to keep my focus up n get my health as good as it can be. Prior to joining this forum, I was giving up hope. Y'all helped me to keep on. I really can't thank you enough. Also, to anyone feeling helpless reading this, if I can do this, you can too!

Wishing you all the best!

That's good to hear Jessie 🙂 Hoping that things continue to improve for you, and give you back the energy you have been lacking 🙂

Great news, Jessie..... Glad to hear that we are helping you in your journey....

As for the tiredness, personally I find that if my BG goes high then I feel somewhat lethargic... Do you self-test, if so then what are your numbers?

Doing something regular like a short walk everyday helps me, I don't like the feeling of being tired for no reason ? Good luck.
