Hey all. I have read a few posts on high sugar levels in the morning and noticed although some people do get high readings, there not consistently high. Pretty much every morning I am about 8-10 before eating any breakfast. I am type 2 btw 🙂

In that case, it's worth discussing with whoever deals with your diabetes care. It might be necessary to adjust your medication types and / or dose.

Hi psycon.

Do you eat any carbs before bedtime?

If you do, it can have an impact, but some people find a protein/fat snack can help. If you eat a large meal late in the evening, it can still affect your BGs in the morning.

Welcome to the forums Psycon 🙂

How do you levels compare for the rest of the day?

Some people also suffer more than others (and more consistently) from 'Dawn Phenomenon', a splurge of glucose released by the liver in the early hours/on rising intended to get the body 'up and going', but a bit of a nightmare if you have a wonky metabolism 🙄

Many T2s also seem to find insulin resistance worse in the morning I think.

Ok just checked levels and bs is 8.2 and not had breakfast yet. It's not that bad during the day. Mornings seem to be the problem. I try not to have breakfast at the moment as it just adds to the already high bs

If you eat something fairly low in carbohydrate and/or slow carbs then it doesn't go up as quickly.

Personally I tend to stick to yoghurt and some walnuts as it's quick and easy, but berries (bluebeeries, blackberries, strawberries, etc) and slow carbs and can be as effective. I also had low post breakfast readings with protien based breakfasts; omlette, ham, egg & bacon.

What medication are you on if any? Metformin is supposed to hold back the morning levels a bit.

If you can give us some info about what you eat in the evening and your meds, we can try to advise better. 🙂

Ok updated bs is now 10.5 and still not eaten. I am on metformin 500mg, gliclazide 40mg two twice a day and simvastatin 40mg. I ate fishcakes, beans and potato/parcnip mash. I did forget to take my gliclazide this morning. That prob hadn't helped

Metformin 500mg is a starting / low dose - worth discussing blood glucose levels with whoever prescribes for you, as they may consider raising the dose.

As well as type of food eaten, portion size is also key - potato / parsnip mash could be a huge amount of carbohydrate, depending on size of portion.

Thank you all for the info. I will try the tips on there and hopefully that maskes a difference
