Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi Everyone, I was diagnosed 6 weeks ago as levels was 52 and had to have another blood test four weeks later. Not waiting to see diabetic nurse I came across this forum and taken advice on buying books and a meter, i have been very careful on what i have eaten as I realise my level is not as bad as it could be so could be easier to manage. Anyway second test is 48 my doctor was very pleased as I was. Well yesterday I saw the nurse for the first time, and I feel very angry and let down, she seemed friendly when she asked me to take a seat then asked if I have any knowledge about Diabetes which I answered "not a lot but I found a great forum where I have picked up some useful tips" she then picked up a scrap bit of paper drawed a circle on it then line down the middle and said "half your plate is to be veg, that much meat and the rest is to be rice pasta potatoes or bread, we will see you in six months, lose some weight and do more excersise" then turned her back on me ????? that was it....I honestly was not in the room for more than two minites. Yes I need to lose two stone and need more excercise but a little guidence would have been helpful, glad you are all here otherwise I would be clueless ( oh by the way as you can see my spelling is bad lol )

Hi and welcome to the forum. This is a great place for help, advice and a friendly chin wag. Unfortunately the medical profession can be very hit and miss when it comes to anything diabetes related. You seem to be off to a good start though.

What a farce! I'm so glad you know where to come for good advice. Whatever you need to know...just ask and someone will help.

Dreadful.

Welcome Sue-Ann and very well done on getting to grips with things. Glad you've found us here and doing well without your nurses 'help'.
Keep up the good work 🙂

Welcome to the gang Sue-Ann. Ask away and we'll help you out wherever we can.

Hi Sue-Ann...how rude and unprofessional...I'd like to say I am surprised unfortunately your experience seems to be all too common...firstly well done on the numbers...secondly thank goodness you came on the forum...got yourself some good reading material and a test meter...I haven't seen the DSN at my surgery...and have no intention of doing so after the accounts I have read here...and such outdated advice from a professional?...you will get so much advice and support here...makes me angry that the level of advice given (particularly at the start) is so very poor...virtually non-existent in many cases...keep us updated.

Hi Sue-Ann! You've obviously not had a helpful experience with the DSN. I'll not elaborate, but my experiences were much the same with a DSN, local surgery nurse and on a short local NHS course where I got a similar 'standard plate' lecture to the one you got.
Like many large government organisations, the NHS doesn't readily respond to change and/or research, so my advice for what its worth is do your own research and hang on in here. And if you are interested in gaining an in-depth insight into diabetes and how to manage it, a copy of Dr David Cavin's book " Reverse Your Diabetes" is worth a read. It may not help you to reverse it, but should help you manage it.

Hi Sue_Ann...I too am a newbie Type 2... and I came out of my first meeting with the nurse feeling confused. They obviously have such a limited time but she spoke so fast I couldn't take it all in but to be fair she is going to see me again in a fortnight. She told me no more than a third of your plate should be carbs and no need to self test because they will test me again in 3 months.I am going to carry on tho because, as the brilliant folk on this forum have pointed out...you need to pinpoint what foods cause your level to go up and what you can eat safely without it having an effect. As I said at the start I am new to this so am learning myself but I have cut out potatoes, bread, pasta, rice and fruit and fill my plate with loads of veg and meat. I eat loads of eggs as well...scrambled or as omelettes...and I snack on oatcakes with a babybel and a few nuts....'I'm a grazer'. You will find you will get loads of helpful advice from everyone on here so never be afraid to talk about anything that's worrying you.
