Thanks xx

Hi Karen. If I’m understanding correctly, you were diagnosed in November and put on metformin, developed a rash and still have the rash now even though you’re not on metformin any more?

if that’s the case I’d speak to the gp again as the rash may be unrelated to the metformin since you’ve not taken it for so long but still have the rash.

It's rare but not unknown for Metformin to cause a rash (see the leaflet). Yes, see the GP as it may be something else. As always, the diet is the highest priority before meds and that means a low-carb diet with enough proteins & fats to keep you feeling full.

Totally agree with @DaveB. Get your diet right and a bit of regular exercise if you can and that will do more for your diabetes than most medication with only positive side effects like weight loss and better physical and mental health. Hope the rash subsides soon but get back to your GP if it doesn't.

Metformin isn’t the only available treatment for type 2, so if that doesn’t agree with you and you struggle to control it just with diet and exercise then there are other options. Unfortunately I think metformin is the one which is usually tried first and some doctors just give you that and hope it will go away. Have a good go first at reducing your carb intake and do whatever exercise you can cope with, but if you still can’t keep the blood sugars down go back to the doctor and ask for something else. There are many options and they should keep trying them until they find what works for you. Good luck 🙂
