To begin, we must remember that we are all ?chemically dependent? on chemicals necessary for survival. It is when our ancient survival mechanisms go awry that difficulties arise. Today?s world has made available more chemicals in larger quantities than ever before?and thus we have a problem.

When our mainly alcoholic and diabetic clients began showing similarities related to needed treatment, it was seen as heresy that we clinicians would show a connection between the two in a 2001 publication. Despite great progress in brain and body physiology even then, the closest connection between the two diseases was seen as the "non-compliance" of clients. There was a difference in the treatment however?one university physician has said that it would be malpractice to send someone with a disease to a church basement for treatment while sending diabetics to physicians for medical help (Dapice, 2009), yet that?s what we did?and still do.
