Does anybody know if brandy with sugar-free pop makes a difference to the hba1c test than wine would do? Would the numbers go up more with the brandy?
 
Unless you are drinking a lot of it, I would not expect it to make much difference to the hba1c which is an average over 3 months
Like any food and drink, it is useful to know how it affects your blood sugars at the time by finger prick testing before and 2 hours later. We are all different (and so is wine) so best to find out how your body reacts to your drink of choice

Anything will affect it.
I assume it's a regular tipple, while brandy is a distilled spirit, it can be back sweetened to a degree.
But the amount will be negligible.
There are more calories in alcohol though, so it can be bad for weight loss.
Wine isn't distilled, it will have more effect if it's a sweeter wine than a dry one, as not all the sugars are fermented out during the winemaking fermentation process.

The thing is we like to know why,lol,do to stomach removal operation my wife needs to monitor her eating, so we always know what she eats. After the operation her blood sugars were controlled (i think 30) and she came of meds, 2019, then all of a sudden in 2021 they went up to 45, so it was suggested she might need to start meds again, so 2 years running perfect( Around or under 40).

Then 2022 they went to 50 and now 2023 they are 55, so creeping up at her annual tests at the Dr’s.

The only things she changed in her diet are she switched from dry red wine to brandy with sugar-free pop and in the morning from bread to oat burst instant porridge and she is using for energy and as sweetener D-Ribose as it happens to be sweet which apparently does not affect blood sugar.

So before going on to tablets she prefers to try to eliminate what the cause could be to perhaps change what she eats. We are using the prick-the-finger method before and after but so far no luck and a bit difficult with some items as she eats with her drink.
All numbers are approximately by memory lol

I don't think there will be much difference in the effect of brandy or red wine as in the quantity you would normally drink them they are pretty well zero carbs.
It is more likely that her ability of the body to cope with carbohydrates has changes and may require reducing to amount of carbs she has in order to reduce blood glucose either by cutting some high carb foods or reducing portion size. It would be worth looking at the effect of the instant porridge as that is something that many cannot tolerate but they may be fine with bread. Looking at an alternative breakfast like yogurt and berries or eggs may help.
Maybe persist with some before and 2 hour after meal tests and note what meals she is having. An increase of no more than 2-3mmol/l or no more than 8-8.5mmol/l post meal would indicate the meal is OK. I hope you can identify the culprit.

I wouldn’t expect so personally.

Gin and slimline tonic and dry red wine seem to more or less leave my BG alone.

Beers and ciders on the other hand… 😱
