Any ideas about how to make a delicious afternoon tea for birthday but to keep down on sugar? Obiously there will be finger sandwiches but its the sweet treats that are the problem!!
The sandwiches are also a problem as well - the bread converts directly to glucose. In blood sugar terms, there isn't a great deal of difference between bread and jam.
The best options are probably to go for coarse brown bread - that means more of the wheat is still behind a fibre husk and thus less able to be metabolised. For the scones, you might want to consider baking your own using almond or flax flour. Jam, there's not a lot you can do about but if you tilt the ratio in favour of more clotted cream and little jam, the fat from the cream will significantly delay the rate of absorption from the jam and make it less of a bumpy ride for you.
Portion control is part of the story - a few small items is better than a few large items of the same types.
As well as adding fat to sandwiches, scones etc, adding salad items eg cucumber with tuna, tomato with cheese etc can help, too - and tastes better, too, I reckon 🙂
If making cakes etc think about replacing the some of the flour with ground almonds, this will lower the carb amount a fair wack and also reduce the sugar or replace with sweetener.
Have a nice party 🙂
Well, nobody's said the obvious have they? - Burgen bread for starters. Don't worry about fingers, either, LITTLE triangles are fine!
If you are positive you need bread at all.
Do they still make the eensy teensy little Hovis rolls? ie shaped like a Hovis?
Slice like it's a big loaf and make scrummy open one mouthful jobbies (bouchons in French) Probably get 5 or so out of one roll !
Cake - now then, are the midget (one mouthful!) choc eclairs they sell in the freezer section at Xmas for buffets around the supermarkets yet? A whole '4 to a packet' eclair has only 10g carbs, so the titchies are no more than 5g if that. Think those packs sometimes contain a selection of different mini-cakes?
