Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello all.

Had a Type II diagnosis about a year ago now. I was around 13.5 stones at diagnosis and didn't really have many symptoms, other than tiredness. FBG was around 15 or 16 and after meals, 25 was not unknown.

Ended up on Gliclazide and a controlled carbohydrate diet. I've joined Slimming World and have found the original plan (Red Days) works really well for me.
Lost around a stone in weight and reduced medication - re-discovered mountain biking and now seem to have things under control. Occasionally a bit lower than I'd like but nothing too low.

Averaging about 5.5 now pretty much consistently.

Problems now seem to be mainly mental - now I've got the sugar levels back under control it's hit that I'll be doing this for life now. Occasionally it gets a bit much. One of my friends suggested a support forum or group to see the experiences of others in the same situation.

So here I am :D

Hi Allan, welcome to the forum 🙂 It sounds like you have done a great job since your diagnosis to get things under control, well done! 🙂 But I do know how it can all begin to seem relentless from time to time and you can lose your motivation. People who do not have to deal with diabetes do not realise just how closely you have to think about it, how it can affect so much of your life and decisions, and it can feel a bit isolating - I sometimes find myself thinking 'why me?'

Fortunately, there is a great group of lovely, friendly people here who know exactly where you're coming from, and that can make things easier to bear when things start to get on top of you. Sharing how you feel can really make a difference, and the forum is her for the ups and the downs.

If you have any questions, there's a wealth of experience here too, so don't be afraid to ask if something is confounding you - nothing is considered 'silly'! 🙂

Looking forward to hearing more from you 🙂

Hi Allan, welcome to the forum. 🙂
Please can you post a photo on your 90th birthday of you mountin bikeing? :D😱

Welcome to the forum Allan 🙂

Hi Allan

Welcome to the forum. I notice from another of your posts that your are testing your own BG and using the info to adjust your diet which is great news.

Congratulations on your weight loss, and good to have you here. Feel free to rant/moan/offload if you are having one of those days/weeks. 20 years in and I still get em - good to have a place where people instinctively 'get it' 😉

Thanks for the welcome all.

I wasn't too much of a stranger to diabetes as my dad developed it several years ago and is on insulin now. He's not overweight and fairly fit and active as well so it was a huge shock.

Fortunately I knew some of the signs and ways to deal with it. I still didn't notice until late on though so avoided the insulin but still have a few minor complications that are getting dealt with slowly and seem to have at least not progressed any over the last year.

I think it's been a week or so since the BBC or some idiot MP has tried to tell me it's all my own fault so I'm feeling sort of positive this week 😉

Allan hi and a warm welcome to the forum
