Relationship to Diabetes

Hi everyone, i already know i'm insulin resistant and have bern borderline for diabetes for a few years. I also have polycystic ovaries of which metformin is used as a treatment. Because of this i have been takin 1000mg of Extended release glucophage which i take in the evening. Apart from this ive had raised cholesterol which is now fine with statins...however i went for a routine blood test last week and have just got the results for my fasting blood test. The blood sugar test was 7.8. My question is could it have been altered because i accidentally went onto auto pilot and drank some milk when i took my tablets (statins etc) before my test. My last 2 tests were 5.8 after fasting and im on the glucophage now which i wasn't before so im quite shocked.

Hello Emma Rose, welcome to the forum. 🙂 I'm sure there will be somebody here who can advise you.

How long before the BG check did you drink the milk? If not more than 15-30 minutes it is unlikely to have been the culprit I would think, as food takes a little while to get from mouth to capillary blood in the fingertips. Those of us who treat low blood glucose expect 10-15 minute delay for even the fastest glucose-based carbs.

It's very hard to conclude anything from just one individual number on a BG meter @Emma Rose - there are a bunch of factors whiuch could have affected the result - something on your finger... a rogue test strip... an unusual blip on BG that isn't part of a larger pattern (BG even in people without diabetes is never fixed - it wobbles up and down and *mostly* keeps within tight limits, but there are exceptions to everything).

It's natural for you to worry, and it may be that your BG is gradually increasing over time, but one odd BG result doesn't really confirm or disprove that. Might be worth making an appointment with your GP to discuss your concerns, they may suggest an HbA1c test, which will give an idea of beneral BG levels over 2-3 months.

Welcome to the forum.🙂
