Hi all, My son aged 11 was diagnosed in August so we are quite new to all this. i was wondering if any of you had any problems with illness when first diagnosed as my so seems to always be poorly he was recently in hospital and is exausted with always feeling sick. all advice welcome xx

Hi Laura

I think you may have posted this in another thread as well as I think that I have seen some replies to such a query, but just in case...

Having higher BG makes you more susceptible to illness, which then increases your BG, so it makes things more difficult. When your son was diagnosed the Diabetes team should have gone through Sick Day rules which I find is good to use as I really don't feel like managing things when I feel ill, so it is good to have a set of instructions to follow without thinking too much. It tells me how to work out how much extra insulin to giev and when.

If your son is missing a lot of school, it would be good to talk to his tutor about this as they may be able to help with some catch up work. I am not sure what year he is, but it is worth getting the school's help.
