Welcome @inez 🙂 We do have people here with various different diets and some with IBS and other conditions. Are your concerns about the level of carbs?

How long have you had Type 2 and are you on any medication for it?

Yes, I’m type 2 and have had to follow a low residue diet a few times prior to colonoscopies. It can still be done while following a low carb diet but you have to be VERY inventive and not particularly bothered about eating the same thing every single bloomin day.

Is there anything in particular you wanted to ask?

Had Type 2 about 7 years have not been prescribed medication as kept it under control with diet. Since April 2022 have been on low residue, white bread, white rice white pasta etc and only mashed veg and fruit. So fed up with it and gaining weight. Have been told must stay on diet forever and never mind your diabetes uou can also take medication!!!

There are several conditions where it is suggested a low residue diet is the way to go many do find that some of those conditions are alleviated by having a low carbohydrate diet but as you say those foods you have listed are not helping with your diabetes.
There may be some lower carb alternatives that will be low residue. My other half was advised to have a low residue diet after having a perforated bowel but the foods listed included butternut squash, swede, broccoli, cauliflower as long as well cooked, sugarfree jelly, high protein yoghurts and Kvarg deserts, eggs. cheese, meats, fish were all OK.
Have a look for some of the low carb breads which may be suitable and the website sugarfreelondoner has both sweet (generally using ground almonds) cakes etc and savoury. Also home made soups can be low carb.

Would you be able to say what the low residue diet is for. Many people find that highly processed carbs are the cause of digestive problems and a low carb diet can actually improve IBS etc,
If you do genuinely need a permanent low reside diet involving eating highly processed carbs, then I would say that they need to prescribe you insulin to cope with it, if it is sending your levels high. You can't simply ignore the effect it has on your BG levels and diabetes, so you need to have a conversation with whoever your diabetes support person is, but I would be getting a second opinion as to whether eating a diet high in white bread and rice and pasta is genuinely healthy for your other condition long term. Dietary understanding and advice is not static and it could be that whoever is advising you isn't up to date, but I am not medically trained.

Low residue doesn't have to mean high carb but it does limit your choices somewhat. Foods like chicken, eggs, white fish, lean beef and pork are all low carb AND low residue. Butter, margarine and cheese are also OK.

Vegetables get complicated as most veggies are high in fibre which is essentially what a low residue diet is trying to avoid. Potatoes are low residue but high carb so not good.

I would have a chat with the medical team that advised you to remain on a low residue diet forever. It's not really a healthy way of eating, the human body needs fibre to regulate bowel movements correctly.

If you can have protein as well then that would allow you to not have so much of the carby stuff. Mashed potato can be quite high carb - more than you’d think for the portion size.

I can understand why you’re frustrated. Hopefully you’ll get some ideas from this thread and be able to eat in a way that works for both your conditions.
