I have just had to up my Metformin to 500mg twice a day despite losing weight, joining a gym and pool and exercising every day. I am 68. Current medical advice is to do resistance training to help muscle mass and bone strength. I have been weight training for nearly a year now together with my hubby who is type 1. I have now found out that Metformin can cause muscle loss. I am very upset about this as I already have skinny legs which I was hoping to build up. Any advice?

Can you explain why you have been advised to increase Metformin?
Do you check your blood glucose levels after eating and alter your carb intake to keep to levels as normal as possible?

Been doing everything right but HbA1c has increased, only 53 atm. I am not overweight. Diabetic nurse has advised my type 2 is genetic.

I suspect that most type 2 is genetic - there are dozens of type 2s in my family.

Time to review your diet? For instance, how does it compare with this red, amber, green list?

Expert opinion seems to be genetics is a factor in all T2D. Even people of normal weight can accumulate too much fat in their liver and pancreas. Diet is the way to get rid of it.

Don't take my word for it. Listen to what Professor Roy Taylor said in this message to GPs/DNs and in this talk. His prescription worked for me, without taking Metformin though my HbA1c was double yours.

The genetic aspect that lead to type 2 diabetes are linked with insulin resistance (How the body responds to insulin), beta-cell function, and fat metabolism... the latter of which increases insulin resistance.

Hi @annbriant11, I take 1 x 500mg of Metformin daily but I managed to lose a lot of my weight including muscle mass before I started to take it. In my case I had moved to a low carb diet (<130g/day) but failed to increase my protein and fat intakes to compensate. As a consequence I think I went through ketosis for a month or so. I have now upped protein intake and also work out at the gym, it is slow going but I am definitely starting to put muscle back on (to wife's relief).

A friend advised me that I should be eating ~1.2-1.5g/protein for every kilo of weight. I also make sure that there is some fat in each meal especially in the evening. The Freshwell chocolate mousse is a favourite and is made with cream by my wife although using coconut milk results in a more typical mousse consistency.

I met a friend from the Sunday folk club when shopping yesterday and she was envious of my trolley full of meat - yet it was hardly extravagant. I chose leg of pork joints which were the slightly cheaper option but not as cheap as shoulder, extra large chickens, chicken thighs, 16 oz steaks, back bacon, ham, with cheese which should last us around 6 weeks. Including some fresh and frozen veges for the next month, it was about £90.
I will need to buy cream, eggs and yoghurt and more fresh things, but joints such as leg of lamb (the one I checked was £22) are beyond our budget these days, and there were no lamb chops. I'll get some beef when I see something suitable for stewing, or use one of the packs of chicken thighs.
Although the general advice is to reduce meat intake for better health, I have noticed that I am growing stronger. I do the servicing for the local Arts University in Bournemouth knitting machines in the summer recess each year and had got to the stage where I needed to pace myself, particularly in hot weather, spreading the work over several weeks, but once I was settled on low carb eating I noticed that I was coping a lot better with both the heat and the exertion.
