Hi I am gradually getting the hang of testing and working out what I can eat I have been keeping a record for a few days now and see a pettern emerging. I am less carb tolerent in the morinings but I am struggling with breakfast I have madem y own museli with no sugar and lots of nuts and had it this morning for the first time my pre breakfast bg was 6.5 i tested after 1 hour and it was 10 which is my highest reading so far bu at two hours I was back to 5.6. So is this a good breakfast or not ? Its quite a big peak but it didnt stay there for long is taht good or to be avoided?

It's probably a bit different for me as a T1, because my levels seem to have quite a lot more spiky variability than well controlled T2s. And research seems to suggest that it is the spikiness of levels after meals that seem to do quite a bit of damage.

For me that level would be acceptable, but only just. If I was regularly seeing 12+ at that point aftre breakfast, then it would almost seem like a 'win', however if other readings were tighter and more stable then a regular spike of 10, pretty much every day, I would probably take a look at to see if I could take it down nearer 8.

Levels after breakfast are still one of my trickiest times. I tend to eat the same breakfast 5 days a week, with an alternative (also identical) breakfast every weekend in order to reduce the 'input' variables and only have the vaguaries of my liver/metabolism etc to worry about.

So I would not stress about it massively, but it might be worth having a look around for some alternative breakfast choices at some point.
 
I can't really add much to what Mike's written but I have Tesco wholegrain muesli with natural yoghurt (plus a few berries) and it seems to stay a bit 'flatter' through the morning. And also seems to buffer against sudden lows too. Might be an illusion, but yoghurt does seem to keep things a bit more gradual.🙂

Worth an experiment.

There will be more expert people here to tell you soon but I understand from all the various postings that this would be too high a spike for a type 2. There are guidelines and I am sure that 2 hours after a meal the aim is for 8.5 and some go for below that as they say spikes over 7.8 are a problem. All you can do is aim for the best you can as I do. But try eating a smaller portion maybe or even something else to see if a lower spike can be achieved.
 
sorry did not read it correctly you were down after 2 hours to below the level they say is OK. Still a 10 is quite high for a spike.
 
The real question is, are you happy with that result?

The fact you were back under 8.5 mmol/L by 2 hours means that you meet the NICE recomendations and therefore you GP/Nurse would probably be happy with that.

Most of us are indeed at our most carb intolerant in the mornings. It's all to do with lots of hormones floating around your body first thing in the morning.
