When me and my sister were little, we only got lucozade when we were ill, so it was seen as a kind of treat with some kind of magical medicinal properties! I don't think they're allowed to claim things like that for it now!

It was first manufactured in 1927 by a Newcastle chemist, who experimented for several years to provide a source of energy for those who were sick with common illnesses, like the common cold or influenza. It became available throughout the UK for use in hospitals under the name Glucozade.

didnt know you were that old Northerner 😉 Nice pic!! I have a child picture too, let's start a thread 😉

Hot blackcurrant juice or lemon and honey - sqeeze 1/2 lemon, add teaspoon or more of honey and top up with hot, previously boiled water. May need to vary amounts to taste. Honey is supposed to be a natural anaesthetic and I believe antibiotic! Tastes nice anyway!

Hi Bev,
How's alex doin? Hope he feeling a little better. I've found the sliding chart on blood sugar / insulin doses, the DSN gave it to me n Nathan. Here goes.

For use with HUMALOG AND NOVARAPID

FOR CHILDREN UNDER 8 YEARS OLD

BLOOD SUGAR INSULIN DOSE
Less than 1mmols No extra insulin
15-25 mmols 1 unit
25-30 mmols 2 units
30-HI mmols 3 units

FOR THOSE OVER 8 YEARS OLD

BLOOD SUGAR INSULIN DOSE
Less than 15 mmols No extra insulin
15-20 mmols 1 unit
20-25 mmols 2 units
25-30 mmols 3 units
30-HI mmols 4 units

Don not give more than 4 units without checking with either your Doctor or Nurse
After giving an extra dose of insulin (HML/NR) check the blood every 1/2 hour for the first 2 hours as some children are more sensitive to the effects.
If your childs blood is less than 9mmols after eating they may not need any extrs insulin

Hope this helps.
Not sure how to send this info to you, saw runner mention PM...does that mean private message you..sorry i'm new to using a computer and just getting to grips with it.. If it is private message I am happy to send you it

Heidi,
Your so kind! Dont worry about the pm - i have written it down! I gave him some corrections through the day because he was creeping up and was 25 at one point - and luckily it all fell in line with the advice you have just put on for me! Then his DSN rang and confirmed what i had done was ok - and just to keep doing what i am doing. Thanks again everyone - your all so kind.🙂 Bev

p.s. If you ever want to send a private message to anyone just click on their profile and it will enable you to send a message to them. x

Hi Patricia,
He looks a bit washed out - but he did eat some noodles tonight and then said he felt sick! It amazes me how much his levels have risen because he is ill! I just kept correcting as per the previous post. I will keep him off tomorrow as he wouldnt really be up to going into school - but i do worry about him getting the mentality that its ok to stay off. I have never encouraged any of them to enjoy staying off school - even going as far as making it a bit boring to be at home! Luckily he has just finished his SATS so school is in winding down mode - so he wont miss much! Thanks for asking Patricia, how is E - i know you said his levels were rising - you must be looking forward to getting him on the pump? Bev

I know just what you mean about 'it's okay to stay off school' -- I fear exactly the same thing. Never having had a moment's concern about it before...

Sorry to hear Alex is still up and down -- difficult! Or rather, up with the levels. It's a battle isn't it? To make things worse, nausea often accompanies highs for E, maybe for Alex too? Just can't tell one symptom from another, so frustrating.

With the staying off school thing, I just have convinced myself that good habits were ingrained early, and that between us we won't allow non-sick days off as a matter of course -- even if maybe E does have more days off than he used to, which I think may end up being the case. Anyway, Alex has had a rather rough ride recently -- SATs and managing diabetes, hard going. A rest will do him lots of good, and understanding he needs a rest will probably also comfort him. It's hard to be strong all of the time!

E is better, thanks for asking. He seems to have settled again after his blip over the weekend -- a cold, undefined stuff? -- though he really is *eating* more than the whole family put together. He's gaining a little weight though too, which is all to the good. Up to 10 units with most meals, and 20 units of Levermir over the day! Ack. AND he's hungry an hour later. Roll on the pump indeed...

Hope Alex settles soon. The combination of highs and feeling ill must not be any fun.
