I hope someone can help me, my husband is Type 2 and currently under the doctors for high sugar readings, up at around 15, the doctor has given him a diet to follow and wants to see him in about a month. The issue I have is he is constantly tired, we run a pub, have done for 8 years. Just recently he can sleep for around 5 hours on and off during the day? I’m worried about it, he says he will ask the doctor next time he sees her but I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this and what you did about it? Thanks for reading and I look forward to hearing from you, thank you

Welcome to the forum
Certainly tiredness is one of the symptoms of high blood glucose often not helped by the need for frequent loo visits during the night. Getting blood glucose down should help so tackling this with some dietary changes are important. I don't know what sort of diet your GP has suggested but have a look at this link for a low carb approach which many find successful.

Welcome @NickiJT 🙂 High sugar can cause tiredness. However, I would say that sleeping for 5hrs during the day is excessive. Could he have sleep apnoea? Has he been tested for anaemia and vitamin deficiencies, particularly the B vitamins and Vitamin D?

I don’t think it’s apnea? He’s had blood tests recently, would they test for that sort of thing?

They sometimes do a full blood count which might identify anaemia but they don’t routinely test for vitamin deficiencies. How recently has this daytime sleeping come on?

I’d say around 4-5 weeks now, he’s always had an hour at around 3pm but nothing like this. We have had a very busy couple of days and late nights, but he’s sleeping around 6 hours overnight, and today he’s been sleeping since around 1pm? It’s definitely not right is it?

No, it doesn’t sound right @NickiJT I wouldn’t wait a month if that’s how far away his next appointment is. I’d phone up and explain the situation and see if he can get checked out.

Thank you, I’ll try and convince him to call the doctors, he’s not the best at that unfortunately thank you for your help x

Hope you can get to the bottom of it @NickiJT

Must be quite worrying for you. Hopefully it is just related to high glucose and busy lives, but good to get checked for any other causes.

How is his mood recently? Low mood or periods of depression can be very fatiguing and sap a lot of energy.

Hope he bounces back really soon.

To be honest, he’s quite grumpy, but I’ve put that down to tiredness? He’s actually agreed to call the doctors today though! It’s so difficult to get him to do that without sounding like I’m nagging? It’s draining worrying about someone isn’t it!

What medication is he on for his diabetes and how long has he been diagnosed?
The right dietary changes are probably more powerful than most other Type 2 oral medication, so if he hasn't made adjustments in his diet before, it is now even more important to impllement that. I imagine it will not be easy when you run a pub to put effort into a special diet.
What has been recommended by the GP?
Does your husband have much/any weight to lose?
Does he tend to have a social drink most evenings whilst working in the bar? Dietary changes relate to drink as well as food, which is why I mention it.
I definitely had really bad fatigue when my levels were high. Is it usually after a meal that he drops off?

What sort of things does he typically eat for breakfast, lunch and evening meal?
s he a snacker?
Just wondering if we can make some suggestions for simple swaps to what he currently eats rather than try to follow a complete new diet plan. NHS dietary advice for managing diabetes has not historically been good which is why we are curious to know what your GP has recommended? Hopefully your GP is up to speed with current thinking.

Hi. I'm a newbie and spotted this post which described me to a 'T'.
My solution? The Doc prescribed iron tablets, Ferrous Fumarate and it gradually got me back on my feet instead of constantly napping.
I want to end by saying no two people are the same, so don't rush out and get iron tablets but get him to have a blood test as soon as possible.
Good luck x
