Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I am going to Crete on Thursday for a much needed holiday. This will be my first trip abroad as a type 1. I have a letter from DN to get my sharps through security 😉. I anticipate warm weather (I hope 😎) and wondered if anyone has any tips for managing insulin in a hot climate as I am a little nervous about being out of the country. I anticipate my good intentions for diet and alcohol may get tested in the next week :D

Buy a small cool bag, or a purpose made one like the Frio and keep your stuff in it then you should be fine whatever happens. I hope you have a great time and I'm not in the least bit jealous... Honest. :D

Been to Crete many times in the past few years. Take your repeat prescription request form with your DN letter. May be a bit late to buy a Frio bag just keep your insulin in the fridge as my Humalog doesnt like the warmer weather. Perhaps buy a small insulated bag there avaliable everywhere. Keep all your meds in your hand baggage. Going through security is NOT a problem. Eating out on Crete is great they serve healthy food in big portions ask for baked potatoes I never eat chips on Crete. Wine is cheap too but keep a handy size fruit juice on you for hypos. This time of the year is best for me as its not over hot but its still hot. You will me amazed when that aircraft door opens and the heat hits you! Have a great time!!
Thats us on holiday in Plakis on the left.

All of the above- plus would talk to your DSN about the need to reduce your ratios at mealtimes and your long lasting too- we change ours by quite abit when abroad- and start the night we get there.Take into account flight times when you talk to them
Also bring double of everything- just in case
And ............... have a fab time
Also who are you flying with.?....RyanAir need a waiver letter- you have to email them I seem to recall

I flew with Ryanair two weeks ago no letter required. Cabin crew even saw me inject as they passed my sandwich over, not a problem. By the way have flew with many airlines Ryanair is better than most.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I am off work tomorrow to pack..and yes it will take me all day :D...so I will pop and buy a small cool bag as you suggest. Just wondering about the advice to keep insulin in the fridge as I thought the pen you are using should be kept out of the fridge  I am assuming I would need it to warm up before I inject ? I was thinking just to keep it in the cool room but a cool bag would be good for day trips out. Looking forward to eating out lots and will remember the fruit juice for effects of the small (yeh right :D) glasses of wine I may have. We are flying with Easy Jet but have flown with Ryan Air before (pre diabetes) will let you know how it goes 🙂.

We found RyanAir OK too..We just tend to go on the medical requirements for each Airline just so happens they say it on their medical bit........... we didnt need to show it ......... actually I think we had to have it for medical baggage allowance but didnt take one as weve streamlined over the time.Weve never had any probs with any of the airlines/security to be honest.Oh and maybe a small plastic box to keep insulin in -in the fridge -ours stuck to the back once!

Hope you have a great holiday !
Think everyone has covered everything ..... Extra strips, extra insulin, a frio bag (if you still have time ?!), copy of your prescription. .... And most importantly .... Have a great time and eat lots of yummy Greek food !! 🙂
