Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
I cannot remember exactly when I was first diagnosed as being pre-diabetic, perhaps three or four years ago now, but then it developed into Type 2 Diabetes. I've never been on any medication. In the beginning I followed a strict diet, proteins, low carb vegetables, fats, but never lost a pound, and continued doing this until a few months ago. At that time my readings in the mornings were very often 7.5, 7.6, or thereabouts

However, although I kept active, doing three mile walks two or three times a week, visiting places of interest, shopping, I was in quite a lot of pain with arthritis, and had to take a couple of pain killers to start the day. And because of the arthritic pain I began following a vegan diet/vegetarian diet in the hope that it would improve the arthritis and it did. Also, strangely, although I was eating lots of jacket potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans, oats, chips done in the air fryer, vegetables, etc, my morning readings were down to 6.2, and later on in the day after walking they were still down in the lower sixes.

But what I don't like is when I include a fair amount of carbohydrates in my diet I can be watching television and drop off to sleep sometimes a couple of times in an evening.

So these last few days I've again tried leaving out most of the carbs and again waking up again to higher readings of 7.5, and this seems illogical.

Can anyone explain what is going on?

Morning reading can often be higher as some people get Foot on the Floor syndrome where the liver releases glucose to give you energy for the day but why that should be more likely to occur when you have eaten lower carb meals I don't know.
It maybe worth you testing individual meals to see what your before and 2 hours post meal readings are to see if that can explain your tiredness which could be due to high blood glucose.
There could be actually no real difference as the readings are within the allowable variegation and accuracy of the monitor.

@Inka has posted information in the past about low carbohydrate menus giving rise to insulin resistance in some people, who do better with veggie/vegan options even if they are higher carb.

It’s about finding the system that your body prefers 🙂

Have you checked your levels when you feel drowsy?

Fatigue and weariness can be triggered by both high and low glucose levels - so it might be helpful to see if your tiredness is accompanied by glucose variation?
